The modes of death's approach are
various, and statistics show conclusive
ly that more persons die from diseases
of the throat aDd lungs than auy other.
It is probable that everyone, without

where these germs fall upon suitable

at first slowly and is shown by a

is largely th'j fault of tho late

kcowingiy made his estimates too
small.
It seemed a little queer to see
men on the streets of Washington
openly wearing badges consisting
ot the Confederate flag aud the
Virginia state flag, but I saw t lit in
last week; they were members of a
Virginia camp of Confederate
veterans, that had been to Alex

the memory of the Alexandria
soldiers in the late war.
Commissioner of Pensions Tan

The president has approved a

that herea'ier the standing of all

THE PROJECTED AIRSHIP.
What Might Happen on Its Suc
cessful Completion.
The consequences cf successful
issue to the undertaking would tn
so momentous that they can with
difficulty be realized. The first
result would unquestionably be to
pnt an end to wars. To show bow
hopeless auy military operations
would be in a country defended by
sucb weapons, we will suppose
that Prince Bismark, after waiting
until Dr. De liaussit has, unknown
to him, completed a few of bis
airships, picked a quarrel with us
on the pretext of a dispute about
Samoa. War is declared sudden Ty,
afttr the German manner, and the
military trains,' which are said to
s'and ready packed, with the horses
at band ready for harnessing, in
the German arsenal?, arc set in
motion. The transports, which lie
equipped for sea, are tilled with
men Irom the nearest garrison, and
in a few hours an immense force is
on its way to invade America.
About half way across the At
lantic the lleet is met by one or
two De Bausset airships, which
sail about far out of reach of shot,
and, taking position in a leisureh
manner, drop a 500 pound shell
lit led with explosive gelatine into
the funnel of each, and L aving thus
annihilated the expedition, pro-C-ed
to Berlin to treat the remain
ing portion of the hostile army ia
it;e same way. Of course, it might
be that the Germans would h .ve
t!:e ni.'ships tirt, and lh war
would bo brought to u couc!um;':i

In regard to pasxenger?, the air
ships, if l hey proved practicable at
ad, would oiler such immense ad
vantages iu point of safety, speed
and comfort that they would soon
supersede all other conveyance- for
traveling long distances. It seems
t .us that the proposed rate of 100
in lies au hour would in practice be
greatly exceeded. There would be
no such obstacles to fast sailing in
the air as are met with in ocean
traveling, in the shape of waves;
logs and danger of collision. By
kcepiug ships on the outward
passage in the lower strata of the
atmosphere and tiie inwardbound
ones in tee upper strata, serious
collisions would be out of tltv
question, and, provided the speed
couid be made to exceed that of
the air currents as much as that
of fcteaiBships exceeds that of the
ocean cu.-ront?, it is difficult to see
what daugrr would remain of
which travelers by well-built and
well-managed airships need be
afraid .
Disarming: an I'usccn t-oe.
"This was sometime a paradox," as
Hamlet says. Since, however, the
people cf America and other 'ands
have been enabled to pit llostctttr's
Stcti:a:'h JJitters against that unseen
foe, malaria, it is sio longer a paradox,
but an easy possibility. Whatever

Johnstown, June 4. Four days
have elapsed since the aiigel of
death swept down through the
valltyoftho Conemangh, but ro
ray of sunshine has yet lightened
the scene of horror at Johnstown
bridge. The sky is still overcast
with heavy clouds and the sua
rests behind a menacing pall, as
though reluctant to view the handi
work of Lis potent power. For
thirty-six hours tire engines have
played upon the smoking ruing
above the bridge, bnt the flames
break out afresh at frequent inter
vals, despite the force of the w ater.
Nearly 2000 men are employed in
different par is of the vailey tearing
up ruins and prosecnting search
for dead. Investigations are not
without fruitful results, for bodies
of the charred victims of the Hood
and fire are discovered with, undi
minished frequency. It bfconies
hourly mere apparent that' net a
pinglo vestige will be recognised of
the hundreds roasted in the Ihunes
above the bridge.
A IIOKKIKLi: DioOOM:itV.
.Since the last sentence was pen
ned the searchers have bronchi up
;i charred and ti:i;iit!y mas.-, i'lom
the sniouldering itin., tho most
horrible experienced within venty
years oi associated press labors.
The verdict of physicians was that
the ghastly discovery was the
charred remains of human beings.
Only the trunk remained, and it
was charred beyond all re
semblance to llesh. Five minutes
I work revealed fragments of a skull,
that at once disintcrgated in the
hands of the discoverer when ex
posed to air. Not a single part
larger than half a dollar was found,
and the whole resembled remmti ts
of shattered charcoal. Within t he
last hour half a dozen discoveries,
in no way less horrifying, have
been made by the searchers as
they rake with picks and hooks in
the smoking ruins. So difficult is
it at times to determine whether
or not the remains are those of
human beings it is apparent that
hundreds must be burned to ashes.
Thus the numbers that have found
a last resting place beneath the
ruins can at best never be more
than approximated.
TO CHEMATE TIIE DEAD BODIES.
It is not believed now that the
fire in the wreck at the bridge can
be extinguished for a week. Tiie
hand of providence is in it. The
suggestions made by the physicians
yesterday that the bodies not
buried be allowed to be cremated
in the ruins for the sake of public
health, which aroused a etorm of
indignation among the survivors,
is viewed with more calmness to
day. T.iere is a growing sentiment
that it i3 after alf the best solution
of tho problem. Weeks and
months will be required to remove
the stupendous mass by artificial
uicaiis and ia the meantime the
putrefying remains ol" the hundred
burned there will be dealing death
to nil tbe sunoundiitg country.
