THE NEWSPAPER REPORTER.
The philosophers of the country
tell us that the newspaper reporters
must be suppressed. In their
efforts to furnish their readers
something iresh, interesting and
readable, they are terrorizing
society and unless something is
done to stop their mad career they
will soon revolutionize tilings.
Here is one in staid old Philadel
phia wh plays the insanity dodge
so successfully that he deceives
the very experts themselves, gets
committed to the asylum, learns
what he is in quest of, comes out
and publishes it to the world, ex
posing the doctors to ridicule and
raising the indignation of the
Ieople to the highest pitch against
the doings of that institution.
Another, in intellectual Boston,
feigns illness, visits a number of
prominent medical practitioners,
describes the same symptoms to
each one and receives from each a
different treatment. The next day
he publishes the symptoms he gave
appending the different prescrip
tions received and the doctors are
unhappy.
One in Chicago, and he must he
an uncowicked chap, pretends to
be convicted of sin, visits the
prominent clergy of the city and
with tears in eyes asks, "What
he must do to be saved?" From
each pastor he receives good advice
and plenty of it, but the advice of
no two clergymen is the same, and
the fellow claims they mixed him
all up.' The paper on which he is
employed publishes the next morn
ing the full text of these inter
views, and the good dominies set
to work to lampoon each other for
giving wrong counsel. Yes, if the
reporter is not stopped the people
will soon learn that the opinions of
great men are not of much value
after all.
Yet the newspaper reporters are
doing a great good in digsjing up
and exposing to light darkness,
placing simultaneously before the
readers of the world the news if
every nation, in fact keeping every
body pasted, and furnishingjki the
newspapers of the country a
quantity of news and readable j
articles on the topics of the times
that would fill to overflowing
every library of the country if
presented in book form
The 11th of last February was a
sort of Fourth of July in Japan.
On that day the new constitution
was proclaimed, whereby the gov
ernment 'was changed from an
absolute to a constitutional mon
archy. Mr. William Elliot (Jritiis,
author of "The Mikado's Empire,"
writes an explanation in the June
Forum of the constitution whereby
the Japanese take bv far the long
est step yet taken by an Asiatic
people toward free government.
The 36,000,000 ctmmon peop
now enjoy for the first time the
protection of law and many of the
rights of free citizens. There is
lioth a property and an educational
qualification of suffrage, and the
house of representatives consists of
about three hundred members at
least thirty years of age, who pay
national taxes to the amount of
fifteen dollars, and are chosen for
four years. February 11th was a
day of great rejoicing throughout
the Empire. Cities and towns
were decorated, cannons were fired
and millions of copies of the new
constitution were distributed. It
was a uay, too, of great meaning
to Japanese women. Foi the first
time the Empress apjvared m
public with the Emperor.

Keports of May "0 from Michigan
states : A heavy tall of snow for
this season of the year is reported
from several parts of the state. At
Schoolcraft the snow is four inches
deep and still fallinjr, while tt
Portland Flint the average dot th
is two inches, but, owing to the
heavy wind, it has drifted to a
much greater depth. The damage
to the crops is very great. It is

CROP REPORTS.
The department of agriculture at
Washington has issued it quarterly
report of the crops o. the country.
It refers to the California and Ore
gon crops as follows : "The crops
look very fine, owing to the abund
ance f rain and the mild weather
of the past winter. Spring cultiva
tion is about finished, except in th
mountainous countries and dis
tricts where Indian corn will be
planted. This is cultivated to
some extent, especially in portions
of California. In the northern
region the nights are too cool.
Potatoes are raised to a consider
able extent on saltmarshes. They
were planted early and are looking
well. The wire worm interferes
somewhat with their quality,
which otherwise is very gooc
Fruit ot all kinds promises fair
crops, though peaches and nectar
ines have suffered from curled leaf
in many districts. The average
condition of winter grain is shown
as follows : California wheat, 99,
rye 98, barley 98; Oregon wheat
79, rye 98, barley 97."
