he well deserved it from a personal
standpoint. An additional motive
in writing to the president was to
let him know of a conteaerate
soldier's kindly sentiment towards
those who fought for the union. I
was a prisoner for six months in
General Harrison's city, Indiana
polis. I confronted his brother in
battle, and said in my letter that
I believe those wno wno were
acquainted with Carter Harrison
in Tennessee, regardless of party,
would be gratified if he would give
him a good appointment."
The British Ministry are serious-
Iv considering the question 01
sending the Prince of Wales to act
as Vicerov of Ireland. I'robably
that would be the greatest strike of
political finesse that they could
Dossiblv attempt. The Prince
would do more towards capturing
the hearts and allegiance of the
Irish people than any other person
could. But even that would not
quench the home rule spirit that is
abroad in the Lmerald Isle and
which will eventually gain the

1889
It is asserted that the royal
family of England are sadly worried
over the prospects of the eldest son
of the Prince of Wales, who is of
course the heir to the throne. He
is 25 years old and unmarried, and
it. i a&id that the family conclave
have decided that he must have an
American wife, all of which is
simply unreliable snobbish rumor.

XEW TO-DAY.
The slow course and devious
ways which a ca3e in court can be
meandered by the wiles of oppos
ing counsel.is pretty well illustrated
in the celebrated Myra Gains case
ef New Orleans, which was finally
settled one day this week, by the
decision of the United States
supreme court awarding the heirs
of Mrs. Gains $567,000, Justice
Brad'ey giving the opinion.
The case was commenced by
Mvra Clark Gains in 1824 while
she was the wife of Gen. Whitney.
The first suit sought to recover
what was known as the Evariste
Blanc tract in New Orleans. Blanc
hniiffht the tract for about $4500
fmm tli executors of General
Daniel Clark, a prominent citizen
f Orleans. He sold it and
some other land to the city of New
Orleans. The grounds on which
Mrs. Gaines set up her claim were
that she was a child of General
Clark by a secret marriage between
him and Zulime Carriere, and that
General Clark had left a later will
than the one under which the
property was sold.
This secret marriage formed the
asis on which the litigation re
volved, and the case was fought
with bitterness by both sides. It
was not until a few years before
t.h war that Mrs. Gaines was
finally declared to be a legitimate
child as well as the lawful heir of
General Clark. Even then the
city of New Orleans did not sur
render, and after the war Mrs.
Gaines was compelled to bring suit
for damages. In 1881 the circuit
court of the United States for the
Louisiana district gave a judgment
in her favor for $1,925,067, and it
is on appeal from this judgment
that the case was decided. The
present case, it is generally con
ceded, exhausts all the resources
of the law, and is regarded as a
final settlement oi the litigation. , , m , , - A Q

the presence of servile labor in a
community cast a stigma upon free
labor and drive it out of the market.
Now the process of elimination can
begin in earnest, and in place of
the departing coolie we may look
for that kind of labor which builds
up a community and adds to the
growth and prosperity of a nation.
Now we may with a clear con
science invite labor from the older
states, and .insure it against being
met on the tbreshhold of this coast
by a horde of Mongolians who can
underbid any whits labor and put
it to flight.
