EDITORIAL NOTES.
It speaks highly of the goodness
f heart of the Samoans that they
treated the shipwrecked sailors
with so much kindness.
Rev 1. 1). Driver, the well known
Methodist minister of this state, is
engaged in a religious discussion
in Chicago with Charles Watts of
London, England.
The Argentine Kenublie is ar
riving at a realizing sense of the
troubles arising from to much
foreign immigration, and proposes
to limit the number to twohundred
per month. A few more lessons
will convince her that in that move
she is making a mistake, and that
it is the quality and not the quan
tity that requires guarding against.
Two Fresno, California, men
have acquired some knowledge
upon the subject of "honesty is the
best policy." They found the;
$3000 of bullion stolen from the
Ilildreth stage last Julv. where it
had been hidden in a stump, and
instead of honestly returning it to
the authorities and gain the reward
of $2000 offered for it, they at
tempted to gobble the whole pile. !
The result i3 they lost it all and
will have a term of imprisonment
into the bargain.

approaching. The Mail and Ex
press makes a comparison of two
different souices of sugar supply
which is entirely out of place just
now while the subject is so prom
inent. It says that it is interestin
to coinpare the sorghum-sugar
industry of Kansas with the cane
sugar industry of Louisiana. In
the latter state good cane com
niands from $4 to $5 per ton ; in the
former, $2. Sugar cane yields 200
pounds or so to the ton ot cane;
sorghum, 80 or 90 pounds. In
Louisiana the production is some
times 25 tons per acre, and perhaps
on an average from 15 to 20 tons ;
in Kansas, sorghum yields about
ten tons to the acre. So far, the
advintage is all cn the side of the
that cane can be prodaced only in
a comparatively t;mall extent of
country in one state, whereas
sorghum can be grown in all the
states south of the thirty-seventh
parallel. .Sugar cane takes rather
more careful cultivation than
sorghum, too. But the other is
the decisive point. Louisiana can
not produce more than one-tenth,
or, at most, let us say one-eighth,
of the amount of sugar we need.
The other seven-eights must come
from somewhere else. If it can be
produced from sorghum, then theie
is a gain to the country.

The Samoan question and Ger

cold-blooded and calculating about
German's attitude on the Samoan

this surrender. The proposition is
for the United States to Luy the
