More and more the people of this
country are carrying into their
every day work life only hard,
practical common sen.se and cit-
carding theoretical assumptions
and visionary dreams. This ten-
dency causes a revisionary action
among those who model the crr
riculums of our educational
institutions and leads to the adop
tion of systems baied upon the
practical ideas of life and the solid
facts of experience, rather than
past legends and future theorizings.
The School Journal says it has
never insisted that work-benches
will be introduced into every di-1
insist, and has insisted for years,
on the introduction of sense-exercises
and sensible expressions of
sense-exercises in every school,
high and low, rich and poor. We
are living in an age of realism.
Theories are at a discount. Hard
facts are in demand. The educa
tion that touches the life that is, is
highly valued. In this material
age of ours we roust not lose sight
of the spiritual, but we must also
not lose sight of the fact that the
spiritual of the present largely
comes through the material, and
that by the material the true spir
itual life of an individual become
practical, earnest and useful. We
believe in God, but we also believe
in man. We believe in the king
dom of God, but we be'ieve also
that to the kingdom of man he has
committed the care of this lower
world. Here in the midst of thmgs
we fight the battle of life, and it is
by means of things that we handle,
see, feel, taste and smell, and so
become lifted above the materiali
ty of the world, into higher, spirit
ual, earnest, practical, common
sense religion. The great heart of
the world throbs in unison with the
workingmen in it. The time for
lazy, digniied do-nothings has
passed away, and the time of act
ive, earnest laborers in the shops,
on the farms, among the moun
tains, and in the rooms where the
thinking is done, has fully come.
We are going to say, over and over
again many more times, life is real.
Let us make it so in all of our
schools.
accompany the refusal with some

the estimate put upon the value of
the services rendered by her.
There is a grim humor about the
sudden death of a boarder at a Sa
lem hotel, while seated at the din
ner table, as chronicled in our dis
patches this morning. If Salem !
hotel dinners often serve men that
way, travelers when going to the
capital will soon learn to take their
lunches with them.

The mortgage tax law receives
its periodical objurations with re
gularity and pertinacity. It en-
dares the odium of being made the
scape goat for all the bins that
lead to the discomfort and iuaje
cuniosity of the entire people, and
still exist; it faces the vitupera
tive anathemas of every man who
sends money into the state to loan
witli the purpose of escaping taxa
tion, and it even stands up to be
roundly cursed by resident money
loaners, whose benefit it conserved
rather than endangers, and con
tinues to brave the breakers of
legislative sessions, and live under
the storms of abuse. The fight
against it in our state is but a
reflex of action in other states
where similar laws exists. Cali
fornia has 'it as a constitutional
clause, and the Chronicle says : A
disposition to agitate the question
of repealing the mertgage tax is
manifesting itself in the southern
part ol the state. The desire for
repeal is based on the false assump
tion that outside capital is urgently
needed for the development of
California, and that it must be
tempted to invest in the state
by granting it immunity from ,
taxation. There is no ground lor i
the assumption that there is not an
abundance of capital here, nor is
there any reason to believe that
any considerable number of tLe
people of the state would vote to
amend the constitution in so im
portant a particular as this. The
question was once thoroughly
debated, and a large majority
declares in favor of making the
real and not the nominal owner of
the projjerty pay the taxes.
