POPULAU FALLACIES.
The number of beliefs cherished
by human beings, which are
founded upon tradition, to put it
mildly though truthfully shaking
superstition would more properly
express the situation, is wonderful
to contemplate. One of the strong
est of these oft; quoted beliefs is
the fully established idea of the
equinoctial storms. (Jeneral Greely
scouts the idea of anv such storms'.
"The eqrinoxes," he observes,
'are imaginary paints at the inter
section of the circle described by
the earth about the sun with the
plane of ihe earth's equator ex
tended till it strikes the imaginary
dome of the sky," and they are
nothing more than this. Hence
"it is very evidence," he says,
that they can have absolutely no
influence on storms. It might te
thought that somehow the length
ening of the day at the spring
equinox might affect the wheather,
but, as this lengthening amounts
to only about two and one-half
minutes daily, and is a sontinuous j
action, lasting for Tkeek? before and !
aftpr th eouinox. the effect is
absolutely nothing." Observations
made in England over a period of
fourteen years and in this country
over a period of sixteen years
6how that storms do not occur
uniformly on March 21st or Sep
tember 21st. The English records
chronicle forty-five storms in
March, but none on the 21st. Of
ingmorethan justice has been done
bat then, how often is justice done
by the strong to the weak? The
United States is the one honorable
exception to the rule of arbitrary
and illiberal conduct pursued in
past veare towards this empire by
Western powers. America acted
as Japan's adviser and counselor
when other nation would have
taken advantage of her inexperi
ence, and America always re
frained from imposing penalties
and exacting indemnities when her
citizens suffered violence ai ine
hands of Japanese. Now, inoeed,
Japau is happy in the assurance
that all Western states are her
friends.. But the memory oi the
past binds her with expectional
closeness to the United States, and
this Ikejima affair tightens the
bond. AVhat America hands to
Japan is not a sum of fifteen thou
sand dollars, but the gift of inter
national friendship and impartial
procedure."
Geo. Fraxcis Train is again
trying to bring himself into public
notice. This time he is starving
himself :or that purpose, a la Dr.
Tanner. He proposes to fast the
proverbial 40 days or more, and is
rapidly losing his redundance of
flesh.
