ing Mrs. Catherine Scott, widow of
the lato C. C. Scott, of the unman
house, presented a petition to the
bounty court, asking that Edward

firm of Jrcott & Post, be cUed to
show why he should not give her a
monthly allowance of $250 and an
additional sum with which to pay
a man to look after her one-halt in
terest in the Gilman house busi
ness until the partnership estate is
settled. The petitioner makes

A SIXTY FOOT FALL.
A Carpenter Working on a Church
Fatally Injured.
Portland, May 1. This after
noon at a few minutes after 1
o'clock an accident occurred at the
new Grace M. E. church, corner of
Tenth and Taylor streets, in which
Derrick JJemars was very badly
it not utally injured, tie was a
carpenter, and at the tme was
standing on a .scaffold on the tower,
fully sixty feet from the ground ',

ner he lost his balance and fell to
the bottom. The injured man was

therapeutics as of many other de
partments of medicine is stiroudea
in obscurity. It starts back to
mytlncal and legendary age oeiore
mankind had been " trained to
habits of scientific criticism, while
yet history was a mass of traditions
anJ rumor was a substitute lor
truth.
It is said that centuries ago the
negresses of West Africa were
accustomed to dip their sick chil
dren in water where lay the elec
tric fish. The remedial powers of
electricity were also referred to by
Pliny anJ Diasconicles.
Largus, a physician of the time
of TiberitiB was accustomed to
prescribe the same remedy in tho
treatment of gout. As long ago a
tho- days of Pliny necklaces of
amber were worn by women, and
children for the sake of this sup
posed remedial powers. In Eu
rope during the middle ages the
loadstone was used in the treat
ment of disease. About the middle
of the eighteenth century Viena
and others excited a new and
more successful interest in the use
of magnetism in disease by the
manufacture and employment of
artificial magnets. While electric
al science was in its infancy and
almost entirely misunderstood, wo
see precious jewels health gathered
from the scattering relics. Wher
ever there is electricity there is
healing power. At the time when
electricity was generated by acci
dent and the fixed laws regulating
and producing it were not under
stood, in that proportion would bo
its misapplication and success in
the treatment of disease.
At our present advanced stage,
and yet only in our early boyhood
days of electricity, we" have the
6tatic, Galvanic and 1'arietic elec
trical machines which by fixed
regulations and care generate the
three above named varieties of
electricity, and can be produced
from the mildest io a current be
yond human endurance. Not only
have we this variety oi" electrical
currents at hand and easily gener
ated and under full control but ex
perience and application have
taught us that electricity is sus
ceptible of classification a is med
icine. The profession (electrical) f-o far
have generally agreed upon this
classification stimulants, feua
tives and tonics.
Stimulants arj usually under
stood to be those agt-nts which
quickly excite the .-ystem and
arouse its activity.
