O NE II UN D RED YEARS IIESCE
In the light oi the grand civic
and military displays in the differ
ent towns and cities of the United
States in the celebration of the
centennial anniversary cf Wash
ington's inauguration it might not
be unprofitable to animadvert to
some of the factors which hare
brought about the wonderful pro
gress of the country during the past
century, and which during the
next one hundred years must
achieve even grander results.
The pioneers, whose camp fires
from Massachusetts harbor through
successive stages westward have
marked the advance line of civiliza
tion, have been for the most part
menimbued with the spirit of true
religion, men who, opposed to the
supremacy of the church, still re
cognized it as a necessary factor
in the up-bu.lding of a successful
commonwealth, and who provided
generously for its growth and con
servation. Thus it was that in the
early pioneer days of the West,
amid the rudest surrounding?,
often prior to civil organization, a
place foi public worship was
established, the minister frequent'
ly being also teacher to those who
could pursue their studies beyond
the rudimentary knowledge
imparted by the grand women of
those early days, who found time
in the midst of their pressing cares
to instruct their children teaching
them how to think and live as well
as to read and write.
Onr national idea is centered in
the schools in a no small degree.
Of the West it may be said that
whatever of its prosperity may be
due to its boundless resources and
other causes, a large measure of it
is due to the church and school,
which, established in the early
pioneer days.have steadily widened
in influence with the transition of
ihe country from the rugged en
vironments of all rew communities
to a condition to-day as exalted,
refined and pure as the civilization
of those contiguous to the hallowed
spct where the Mayflower landed
on Plymouth Kock.
Much as has been accomplished
in the nineteenth century, its
grandeur must pale before that
The total prod' - of coal in
the world during . ear 1888 ifl
put by a high authority at 430,000,
000 tons, of which the United
StatPB nrodnced 130.000.000. Of
the home product Pennsylvania is
credited with 71,000,000 or more
than one-half. Little coal is ex
ported from the United States
except to Canada, which took
from us last year 3,250,000 tone.
The Dominion leyies a tax of sixty
cents per ton on bituminous coal,
while anthracite, under a new re
gulation, is admitted free. Imports
of coal from Canada last year
amounted to 730,000 tons, most of
which went to points on the Pacific j
ccast.
