numbers which arrived in the city
yesterday to. participate in the cer
emonies' to-day were immensely
swollen by every train which ar
rived with" its overcrowded load of
humanity. Especially was the
excursion train running from
Eugene City loaded down to the
fullest extent. The militia com
panies of Eugene, Albany and
Salem were on the train as well as
large numbers of citizens from all
along the route, and the streets of
Portland were one continuous
throng.
At 1:30 p. m. began the grand
parade headed by the 14th regi
ment U. S. army band, followed
by troop F, regular cavalry, Grand
Army of the Republic and old
soldiers, regular army troops,
Bishop Scott school boys, O. N. G.
militia, Portland artillery, officers
of the day, Chemawa Indian
Btudents and band, Portland pub
lic school, Mt. Angel college cadets,
civic societies, firemen and citi
zens and a small boy and small
wagon drawn by a small dog.
The line reached through ttie
principal streets of the city, and
passed the reviewing stand on the
east 6ide of Fifth street opposite
the postoflice building, from which
point the column was reviewed by
his excellency, Sylvester Pen
noyer. governor of Oregon. The
line of march was continued to the
tabernacle, at which place the pub
lic exercises were held as follows:

gala day and the celebration had
proved a most complete success.

to several railroad companies that

which Gould has got hold of.
These are to be capitalized at
figures such that Gould will make
