Death of John McCoy.
John McCoy, an eld pioneer of
Linn county, died suddenly at his
home near Oakville at " o'clock
last evenining, aged 74 years. He
had been able to be up the day be
fore and was not thought to be
seriously ill. He wus taken with
congestion of the lungs and died
very peacefully. He came to Ore
gon in 1845 and reared a family of
seyen children. Two of them, i
Mrs. F. M. French and Andrew
McCoy, reside in this city. James
B. McCoy resides at the home of
his late father and four sons, Wil

deceased's wife died some years
before him, also passing away
quite suddenly.

TEE ELECTKICT LIGHTS.
The Capacity of thPlBt: Will Be DonMed
' Tkia Bamaer.
The growth of Albanv i3 admir
able shown by the increasing de
mand for the electric lights.
Messrs. Allen & Goff states that
since putting in the present lights
twelve months ago the plant.which
was then considered ot sufficient
size for several years to come, has
been taxed to its utmost capacity
and the demand for lights cannot
now be supplied. They will ac
cor jingly tjis summer double the
capacity of the arc lights by adding
another 2000 candle power, 3a
lamp dynamo. If the present de
mand for the incandescent lights
continues another dynamo will also
be added to this system. Albany
has the largest and most complete
electric light plant in the state out
side of Portland, and under its
present managers is giving a most
satisfactory service as is shown by
the manner in which it is appre
ciated and used by the public.
Look Out for Him.
There is a very sleek fakir doing
this city at present, for whom the
people should be on the lookout
and give him the grand bounce.
He is playing an old game, but
there are always those who get
caught, no matter how often the
warning is Bounded. His scheme
is to represent himself as carrying
a line of dress goods, nien's suitings,
carpets and other goods, which he
is selling at extremely low prices.
The carpets and dress goods he will
sell on six month's time and at
such low rates as to astonish the
housewife. The suitings are the
only items for which cash is re
quired and the great inducement
offered in this case is that he has a
tailor following him right up, who
will be along in a week or so and
make up the suits in guaranteed
style for little or nothing, six or
seven dollars for the best suits.
These suitings are the only part of
the order filled on the spot, and as
thev are the only part for which
cash is taken, they are all that are
ever delivered, and it is needless
to remark that the tailor, who
seems to be on the road only for
his health, never shows up. The
fellow's name doing Salem, is
given as G. II. Hamilton, a good
talker and has succeeded in roping
in a few families, but not manv.
Pass him along, you have no use
for him : and if he becomes saucv

Snakes in His ISooU.
The attention of Chief of Police
Hoffman was directed yesterday to
one II. B. Morgan, who had de
lirium tremens at the Waverlv
boarding house, which was a result
of a protracted spree. The inmates
of the house were alarmed by the
cries issuing from his re Dm and
thought he must be dying. A
physician was called who gave him
a quieting potion, giving the fellow
an opportunity to sleep off his
delirium. His wife had telegraph
ed him $25 the day previous from
Oaks, Dakota, but it was squand
ered by the wretched man, and
when informed ot his condition his
wife refused to send him any more.
Until he can recover from his de
bauch and get the swelling out of
bis head and snakes out of his
boots he will probably be a city
charge, after which lie may have
sense enough to go to work.
Valuable Fire Proof Stone.
Frank Wood, who owns two val
uable stone quarries near this city,
one on the Santiani river and the
other across the Willamette in
Benton county, received a letter
recently from the Helena Gran
ite and Sand Stone Co-operation
Stone Co., inquiring if the
stone obtained from his quarries
would stand fire sufficiently to be
used in lining mining smelters.
Mr. Wojd at once took a quantity
of stone from both quarries and
had it tested in the furnace of the
Albany Iron Works. The stone
stood the test perfectly, being left
in the furnace with the melted iron
for 40 minutes. He has replied to
the company stating the result of
the test. If this stone proves as
valuable as it now promises to for
this purpose there will no doubt be
a big demand for it in the terri
tories where mining is carried on
extensively.

THE WATER BUPPLY.
With tne Lnprovemest of tha Water Works
Will Come Fresb. Water.
The people of Albany are to be
congratulated upon the action
taken by the city council concern
ing the matter of requiring pure
water only to be famished by the
owners of the city water works.
The present supply, as has hereto
fore been pointed out by the
Hekalo, is sufficiently impure to
breed the germs of the worst kind
of diseases, and it is gratifying that
the. committee on health after
thoroughly investigating the mat
ter, has made a vigorous report,
for the purpose of correcting this
abuse. With pure fresh water
flowing down from the snow
capped gorges of the Cascade
mountains, there is no excuse for
furnishing sewer water for house
hold purposes. It is well that a
change is to be made and fresh
water supplied.
The report of the committee from
the city council upon the subject,
which we republish by request, is
as fellows :
To tbe Honorable Mayor and
Members of the City Council :
We your committtee to whom
was referred the matter of the
water furnished the city bv the
water company, beg leave to re
port that we have made a careful
examination of the matter, and
find that a portion of the water is
taken directly from the Calapooia
river, a short distance below the
discharge pipe of the Calapooia
street sewer, and a portion taken
directly from the Vine street canal,
and below a number of kitchen and
sink drains, and would recommend
that the owners of the water com
pany be required to see that ordi
nance No 143 is enforced, in regard
to the supply taken from the Vine
street canal, and also recommend
that the committee on health and
police be instructed to corfer
with the owners of the
water company to make some
suitable arrangement that when
the new pumps are placed in posi
tion a supply of fresh water can
be furnished through tsrra 2ott,
cement, or other suitable pipes,
from the Albany and Santiam car al,
to be taken from above the city, or
from the Willamette river.

Concerning the Grismer-Davies
company, which will appear at the
opera house in this city next Fri
day evening in"The World Against
Her," the New York Evening Sun
says: The first production of
"The World Against Her," a melo
drama of English life, by Frank
Harvey, was made on the city
stage last night at the People's
theater and the house was packed
to its capacity. Mr. Harvey's play
had considerable success in Eng
land before A. M. Palmer secured
it for this country. It is. bevond a
doubt, destined to become popular
here with the vast multitude of
playgoers who like melodrama.
"The World Against Her" is the
story of a faithful wife's nobility
and fortitude through a series of
domestic calamities, caused pri
marily by the stupidity of a too
busy husband, and incidentally
assisted by the rejected lover of
the good wife. The play is full of
action ; all the incidents are stir
ring and probable ; the language is
vigorous, if simple; some of the
character sketches are vivid, and
every climax is ingeniously con
trived and thoroughly effective.
