THE SHEEP AIVI CATTLE WAK.
Poison and Dynamite Uxed by the
Stockmen.
Pendleton (Or.) Tribune.
From parties just down from
Camas we learn that there has been
a little trouble over on the John
Day. A few days ago a man took
over there a band of sheep. The
horse and cattle men swore that no
sheep should be summered in that
section, anc. told the sheepman to
more on. He didn't move. Con
centrated lye was called in and 600
sheep will no longer wake the
ech.es with their plaintive bleat,
and still the sheepman declined to
move. Then a piece ot pipe about
two feet long, which bad been used
for mining purposes, was filled
with giant powder and a fuse at
tached.
In the doad hour of the stilly
night, when the sheep were hud
dled together in the corral and the
herder was enjoying the quiet rest
of an untroubled conscience and a
peaceful sleep, there was an ex
plosion and a tremoung oi tne
eaith as experienced in times of
seismic phenomena. The bomb
bad exploded ia the corral. A hole
was torn in the ground about four
fett deep and there was a mixture
of mutton, ot wool ana ot oirt. A
piece of the pipe went through the
walls ot the caO:s an passed in
close proximity to the sleeping
herder. When morning oroke tie
prepared a hast; meal, and taking
tint sheep were left alive sought
other pastures and fields new. He
could stand the threats and defy
the concentrated lye, but the giant
powder was a ii-iie tio much for
hi. ..en.itive uetves.
EOBEKT ELSMEEE.
Once tiiere lived an Fiulish lector,
One whocc hair was very red;
At eld Oxford he had studied.
Therefore he was quite well bred,
Robert married Catherine Lt yburn,
To resist him no girl co: Id;
Catherine lic was very pious
Very, very, awful gocd.
Both together worked like majors.
Cured the sick aud fed the poor;
Even when the drain were uasly
Robert dug a bran new -ev;er.
Now, a wicked squire lived near him,
And be loaned poor Ho' :rt tracts.
Which convinced the red.Leired rector
That the l'ible wasn't facts.
Oh, these horned, penny dieidfu'.s
Said that truth .and facts were slosh,
Ilea vn is a lIellueimtion,
Also that an Els'merc bosh.

So lie wandered, lean and lank.
That the neigh boro soon pronounced

Hobertleft the CLurtli of Finland , f
Took to lecturing evciy week,
And was sought by museum people
As a ministerial freak.
One cold day his lotuach hurt him;
Hobby howled and screamed like fun,
Catlieiinc was in a dilemma.
Paregoric she had none.
Up he jumped in bed like fuiy;
"Katy, Kaly, wife!" he cried,
"I'm the biffgest chump that's living,"
Then he had a fit and died.
This is all I know about it,
Hut the novel is immense,
Tho' I doubt, and doubt it strongly,
If it's worth ,uite tifty cents
Was poor Elsmerc's life a failure?
To his wife a 6ad endurance?
Oh, no, for we must rememi er

no doubt, on his return Stanley
will be aLtie to tell us more of the

his standpoint on the w-.t shore of
Albert Nyanza. It now seems
fairly e'eir that the natural outlet
of the region aiounj the Albert

its many rspids and almost inpene 1

Victoria Nvanza and I3riti.li East

Stanley louud the liver Aruwimi

A century ago the Albert Nyanza
was twelve or hlteeu units longer

now. With the wearing away of
reels obstructing the .Nile below
Wadelai, the lake has rapidly
receded and is still doing so to tbe
astonishment of Emin Pasha, who
brst saw Lake Albert seven or eight
years ago. Emm says tbe islands
that were near the west shore have
now become brad lands occupied
by our stations and native villages.
