Sheriff Smallmsa and Ex-SkerifT Smith
Wer4 Nt Ind'cted,
No little comment was created in
this city yesterday by the report
that Sheriff Jno. Small mon and
Ex-Sheriff D. S. Smith had been
indicted by the U. S. grand jury
for allowing W. R. McDaniel, while
sentenced to imprisonment in the
county jail here, to remain at lib
erty, and had been arrested by a
U. S. marshal and taken to Port
land. This, howtver, is incorrect.
They were not arrested, but went
to Portland of their own accord to
give evidence before tne U. .
grand jury, which is investigating
the case. A dispatch received at
this office from Portland last night
states that they had not been in
dicted. The facts in the case are that
McDaniels, who was sentenced to
one year's imprisonment in the
county jail for using funds of the
postotlice while postmaster at Har
risburg, was given unlimited lib
erty and allowed to go anywhere
in tne city, and also to visit his
wife, who was ill. Complaint has
Deen made to the U. . grand tury,
and the '.-as" is being investigated
by that body. They may or may
rot be indicted, or thev may be
simply lined for contempt of court,
or the case may be dismissed.
The pena'ty, if convicted ,is
either imprisonment, or a line of
from $1 to $:(X)0 sit lie discretion
of the court.

The
Ad saving that the wav to!

stomach is very true. Others have
the same strong weakness. It
takes various dainties to tickle
various palates ; for instance take
a good old German, he likes a good
Limburger cheese, others a piece
of fine California cream cheese;
tak the Italian, he likes macaroni
and cheese. The average human,
though, likes everything that's
good, a nice fat chicken and horse

comb honey, gut edge butter or
fresh eggs. The Willamette Pack

L. L. Riley, f this city, shipped
by Wells, Faro & Co.'s express
yesterday to his mother at Coburg
two fine specimens of Chinese
pheasants which he had captured
near Millers station. They were
beautiful birds, and in their coop
did not appear wild. They were
caught with a bird dog in a straight
race. The birds, it is said, will
often not fly from a dog but lead
an ordinary canine a fleet chase.
In this manner they can be caught.
Mrs. Riley will endeavor to domes
ticate the two birds shipped to her.

reports work on i he jetty at the

the south side of the jetty is bad'ly
filled in, which will necessitate the

already of great benefit in cutting
the channel and clearing it, and
that the work hereafter done will
be of a more serviceable and per

the foundation work has now
settled to bedrock and will not sag
any further. There are about fifty
men at work in the rock quarry
