THE ritivLlZISG ELEMENT.
The great factors in pushing for
ward the civilization of the nations
of the earth, are inter communica
tion and the cominin-ly of the
people to.'ether the creating and
maintenance of common interests
that cause rapid and constant
exchange of ideas and thoughts,
and relations of peaceful comity
and kindlv fueling.
Towards tnese ends the leading
means are trade and commerce,
and the more extended a nations
interests are in that direction the
more rapid strides it makes in the
pxDansions of its higher civilization.
Among the nations and people
that naturallv should be co-workers
with our nation in the marts of
trade and exchange are the dwell
ers in our neighboring South
American principalities. Just at
present those countries bordering
upon the isthmus are in a deplor
able condition. From that condi
tion may grow relationship that
will be advantageous both to them
and us. An exchange says that in
connection with the distressing
condition of affairs in Ceutial
America there comes a suggestion
6howingthe disposition of miner
American States to recognize the
controlling influenco of this country
in American affairs. The suspen
sion of work on the Panama Canal
has thrown thousands of persons
out of employment, paralyzed busi
ness, and produced a very serious
financial crises. Public meetings
have been held, the Chamber of
Commerce of Panama has discussed
the s'tuation, and the government
authorities have been trying to
discover some mode of relief, but
nowavout of their troubles has
vet been found, and a dispatch
irom Panama say9 the pep!e have
about concluded that the only hope
of alleviation lies in the direction
of the congress of representatives
, of the American republics, to be
held at Washington next Uetooer,
which will discuss the question of
a standard currency lor all the
American nations. A standard
currency for ail American nations
would mean closer commercial re
lations, and the fact that Central
Americans are looking to it as a
means of financial r.liet shows
thev are leginn:ng to realize the
importance of closer trade relations !
with the Great Republic. This is
N. Dolph, who is a student at
Princeton College, with four other
students visited a neighboring town
where they were subjected to arrest
ou the charge of disorderly conduct
and young Dolph was brutally
assaulted with a policeman's club.
The justice however discharged
the young men from custody.
Schoolboys are apt to get into a
great many pranks.
The Railway Age pays the prac
tice of shiDDins corpses in baggage
cars upon first-class tickets had
h!nmi so common and is so ob-1
jectionable in various ways that
many of the railways are anxious
to be relieved from this traffic, and
the General I'assenger Agents'
Association has before it for con-
B'deration at its next meeting a
resolution that whenever a corpse
is offered lor transportation the
person in charge shall be referred
tt t ie express company doing Ber-
YiCJ on the road and the railway
aent shall decline to receive the
body lor transportation.

SPEOIALIIES-
Ix all probability the farmer
who plants a goodly patch of pota
toes, this season, will reap a rich
harvest. Potatoes have been so
extremely plentilul that they have
fallen in price until there is no
market for them, and in conse
quence the farmers are turning
there attention to other crops.
California farmers are planting
largely of beans. Therefore the
farmer who does raise potatoes . is
likely next fall to find a market for
them.

The time is rapidly approach- tirst-ciass cow winted.
that can engage the attention of
onr government. Some of the
states of South America are de
veloping very rapidly, and the
trade of that region is becoming
more valuable and desirable every
year. At present it is practically
controlled by European nations
which, by out witting us in busi
ness and diplomacy, have captiued
a trade that naturally belongs to
us.
ini: when the augmented popula
tions and highly developed re
sources of the southern continent
will produie a development of
vommerce that the United States
inay well strive to attra.t to them
selves instead of 6Upinely permitt
ing to be diverted by other nations.
Without doubt the adoption of a
standard currency, as suggested,
would lead to an acceleration of
trade interests, and thus help to
bind the nation closer together and
produce the desired results. The
Tehuaniepee canal will be another
strong factor in that direction, and
if more intimate, rapid and perfect
routes of travel, either by ocean or
by land could be induced by gov
ernment encouragement, it would
t jnd to the same desirable end.
