FALSE DEDUCTIONS.
The growth in the post office
business in this city during the
past year, is one of the many indi
cations of the positive and perma
nent growth of the city. The
receipts of :he office were as fol
lows : J une, $1274.41 ; September,
$1219 20; December, $1466.65;
March, $1490.69. Total $5450.95.
Thi has been an increase of over
$500 during the year.
The Oklahoma craze will shortly
subside, for the settlers upon the
lands over which so much con ten-
i tion and trouble has been expended
will find that they are as far from
having landed in paradise as they
would be in any other part of the
United States and the excitement
and furore of possession will be
gone and they will wonder what
caused them to be so crazy wild.
The practice of deducing argu
ment from statistical, and like
information, to maintain a theory
'hatha been advanced, is com
"laoti in practice, and often mislead
ing if not absolutely pernicious in
results. The reliability of figures
cannot be questioned and are
usually convincing. When there
fore the aid of these figures are
diverted towards evolving false
premises, they become an instru
ment of falsehood and wrong
instead of truth and right,
Take for instance the recent
argument of Cardinal Manning
against the public schools of our
country, in which he cites, as Prof.
Fisher shows from one of his
authorities, statistics which are
thought to demonstrate the baleful
effect of common schools on the
morals of society. The group of
six New England Scates is com
pared with six of the Southern
States. One of iheui had common
schools, the other had not. The
results are spread before us. "Mas
sachusetts and her five sisters, out
of her native population of a little
more than two and a half millions,
had on the 1st of June, 1860, jubt
'1 459 criminal in prison," while the
six Southern States, -her compara
tively unlettered companions, with
a native white population of over
three millions, had but 477 in
prison. Before inquiring into the
accuracy of the statistical data, it
nay be well to notice briefly the
rlimav character of this logic. It is

the ere long chief commercial city
of the upper valley.
The public schools in Walla
I Walla were dismissed upon la&t
Monday, April 1st, to allow the
children to go fishing for trout, the
fishing season opening upon that
diy. Probably the trout did not
enjoy the holiday.
