IS TIIO (JO IT FREE.
It is a cenuuon beliel among
human beings that in the realm of
jnmd thought there is perfect
ireedom. As a recent writer says
though tyranny finds many ways
to enslave man, it. can have no
direct power over his thoughts.
His actions may be restrained, his
speech may be fettered, his body
may be chained, bis life itself may
lie taken away, but his thoughts
iioone can interfere with. They
remain his own, and, except with
his will, no one can even guess
what they are. But does this
absence of direct power ensure true
freedom of thought ? It may at
Jir.it sight seem to do so, but a
ueeper insight into the nature of
thought will show that it is itself
subject to many influences ana
conditions. Associations, circum
stances, education, climate, race,
occupation, hopes, fears, emotions
all exert an indirect but power-
encourage and if possible carry out
this plan of work, is the special
object of this department from the
alert and vigilant national W. C.
T. U. superintendent through stata
and district officers, down to each
local worker. To this and the
local superintendent is requested
to secure the appointment of a
temperance secretary in each Sab
bith school under her charge,
members of the V. C. T. U. or Y's
being considered very desirable for
this post. The duties of these
temperance secretary is to do all
they can for temperance in the fol
lowing and othei ways :
1st . By securing so far as pos
sible the use of the temperance
lesson.
2d. By distribution of temper
ance literature monthly, or as often
as may be agreeable to all concerned.
3d. By temperance concerts,
lectures, etc.
4th. Securing signers to pledge.
otu. Introducing- temperance
books in Sabbath school libraries.
6th. To keep an accurate ac
count of the number of pages of
iterature distributed including
papers, lesson leayes, leaflets,
bearing on this subject.
So far dear sisters lor the skele
ton of the work to be done, which
must be clothed upon with life
from the warm consecrated hearts
of feithful Sabbath school workers
all over the land. Some of the
possibilities of this important work
may be mentioned in passing. To
reach the impressible mind and
oscience of childhood with truth
and light, Jesus said," lie that
