John Scott Harrison, brother of
the president, has been having a
jolly time in Washington. He is
smaller than the president and
younger, and they have many

Hitherto machines for telling
trees have been driven by steam
power, but this is sometimes incon
venient, vspec.ally iu thick woods,

forests. Usua ly in men machines

it is drilled. When the wood is of
a soft nature the drill has a sweep
ing motion aud cuts into the trunk

electric rnortor mounted on a cafr
nae, which is brought up close to

motor is capable of turning round
its vertical axis, aud the drill is
geared tn it in such a munnci that
it can turn through an arc of a
circle and make a sweeping cnt into
the trunk.

severed. It is then stamped to
keep the cut from closing, and the
operation continued until it wouid

motor by insulated leads brought
through the forest from a generator
placed in some convenient site.
