THE NICARAGUA CANAL.
This a progressive age, and on
' all sides are gigantic enterprises
flourishing, which a few years ago
would hava bde l thought to be iui
jK8sible undertakings. In the
light of the miserable failure of the
Panama canal scheme of De Les-
peps, the prospective success of the
American Nicaragua canal project
is refreshing. If the expectations
of the projectors of the Nicaragua
canal are realized, large merchant
ships will pass from the Atlantic to
the Pacific by this new water-way
within a period of five years. The
cost of this great work is estimated
at $04,000,000, and as there are no
tliiticult engineering problems to
)e solved, and every foot of the
ground has been carefully surveyed
it is possible that this estimate
may prove to be approximately
correct. The work will be executed
by private parties, without gov
ernment aid, the government hav
ing nothing more to do with the
enterprise than to assume the pro
tection of the rights of those of its
citizens who may be concerned in
it. It is to be an American work,
controlled by citizens of the United
States. The course of the canal
will be by the most direct route
matter of state institutions the
people would like to hear an ex
planation, otherwise they will urge
and expect that the state reform
school be located at Albany
Salem has the state buildings
which naturally belongs to the
capital ; Eugene has the stale uni
versity, Corvallia the agricultural
college, Portland, state law and
medical schools, and Albany which
has no state institution now insists
upon having tne state reiorm
school. Will the executive board
above named see that this portion
of the state is no longer slighted,
but treated equallv with other
counties by giving us the state re
form school ?
' A Warning.
The modes of death's approach are
various, and statistics show conclusive
ly that more persons die from diseases
of the throat and lungs than auy other.
It is probable that everyone, without
exception, receives vast rumbers of
Tubeicle Germs into the system and
where these germs fall upon suitable
soil they start into life and develop,
at first slowly and is shown by a
slight ticklinv sensation in the throat
and if allowed to continue their
ravasres thev extend to the lung's pro
ducing consumption and to the head,
causing: catarrh. Now 11 this is
dangerous and if allowed to proceed
will in time cause death, A t the onset
you must act with promptness; allow
ing a cold to ir without attention is
dangerous and may lose you your
mo. as soon as you feel that some
thing is wronff with yourthroat. lungs
or uostrns, obtain a bo' tie of Boschee'6
