EDITORIAL NOTES.
Now for the woolen mills.
With grim humor the Canadians
are now talking of annexing the
New England states to the domin
ion.
Before the autumn winds begin
to blow Albany will have street
cars running and woolen mills in
operation.
The immigration to Oregon this
summer promises to be larger than
ever before. Albany will receive
a liberal share of this.
Keal estate in Albany is steadily
increasing in value. Such enter
prises as woolen mills, street rail
way, new business blocks, etc.
adds money to every property
holder in the citv.
TEMPERANCE BOTES.
Contr.buted ay ttaeW. C. T. U.ft
The number of VV. C. T. Unions
in Georgia has nearly doubled the
last year.
Wherever Mrs. ieavitt stops on
her circling way she ties another
knot in the white ribbon which is
fast binding the hearts of women
the world over in christian love.
At latest report she had just organ
ized a union ot native women at a
mission station in South Africa,
also one at Verulani, a little city
on the coast..
Whatever truth you see that has
in it the power of human help,
quickly range yourself alongside of
it; work for it, breathe in it, allow
it to flow through your veins and
arteries, and in due time there also
the truth will stand up for you, and
another position be won for God
and for progress. It is the same
old story of the gospels, where
hiving nrst sought the kingdom of
God and His righteousness, all
things else are added thereto.
Present conditions indicate a
bountiful crop in Oregon this year.
The crop in California w?s thought
a few weeks ago to be nearly a
total failure on account of dry
weather, but the recent rains
have given Californians assurance
at least of a partial crop.
Tiieke are said to be many small
parties of American ladies who are
making the tour of the Continent
uuaccompanied by gentleman or
even by a courier. The parties are
generally made up of half a dozen
middle-aged ladies, who travel
leisurely and comfortably, and find
no trouble whatever iu getting
about. The custom is a growing
one, and whereas half a dozen
years ago such a thing would have
ben regarded as impossible, now
it excites no comment.
Ir w seriously told that ''the
length of tne Mississippi river hu
always been placed at 4100 miles,
but civil engineers fumiiiar with
tite stream suy that it has short
ened itself over 4(h) miles in U
years, and will do a well in the 1'it
to come." lut we are not told
whether that great river is ptraiirht
ening itself out from its snake like
rurvjs, or whether the late seven-wint'-rs
alon its northern coiir.-
are the cause of its mysterious con
traction. Col hi j; a great contrac
tor.
It is related of that queer genius,
Rev. Thomas K. Beecher, that he
was once asked by a young theolo
gian whether he would not have
them (the youngsters) "stand up
for the truth." To this Beecher
answered in words full of meaning,
and with solemn tone, "Truth is
eternal ; it is a part of God. If you
will give it a chance, the truth will
stand up for you." A more preg
nant utterance never fell upon
listening ears, nor one better worth
remembering. History is nothing
else than a record of the singular
ways in which this great principle
has been confirmed in every pro
vince of life and morals.
