A Cranky toulemp.
Under this heading the Salem
Statesman of yesterday says:
"The Albany Democrat is bitterly
cranky towards Salem and seems
to consider that the best war to
assist its own town is to abuse and
belittle the people and the enter
prise of its neighbor. The recita
tion in these columns of a fact
concerning a shopping expedition
of some Albany young ladies to
this city, caused the Democrat to
have spasms and to throw out an
ungentlemanly and wholly un
called for, as well as unfounded,
slur on the ladies of Salem, than
whom no city in the union can
boast of a better collection. Now,
the Democrat arrogates to itself a
full knowledge of the capacity of the
proposed woolen mill here and says
the mill will start in as a two-set
institution, thus detracting as mi ch
as possible from its importance.
This, too, notwithstanding the fact
that Aloany people put forth their
best endeavors to secure the mill
at that place, but failed to raise
the wherewithal. That Salem has
lhe stores and stocks of goods to
draw trade from Albany people;
that Salem enterprise and liber
ality have secured the establish
ment of a woolen mill, while Al
bany still maintains the reputation
as a very good quiet town ; these
things constitute Albany's misfor
tune, not Salem's fault, and th
brethern up the river should net
allow a commendable spirit o.
emulation to develop into unwoituv
jealousy, the prompter of elandm
and abuse." The Statesman
should cast the beam out of itsosu.
eye and not Beek to create an un
necessary rivaly between Alban
aud Salem juot because of the
foolish statement of some news
paper, which does not in any way
reflect the sentiment of the public.
