THE WHEA T MARKET.
As eveiythimr that pertains to
the great cereal crop is of inline, t
interest to denizens of the valley
where wheat raising is the indus
try, we gleam from an eastern
nauer the following, wi.hout
endorsement or remark otherwise
than it bears the impress of f.tct:
There are some indications of the
loss to this country of a consider
able part of the European grain
market. In 18S7 we sent to Great
Britain the equivalent of 9S,3 14,584
bushels in flour and wheat. In
18S3 the shipments of these to
articles had fallen to 57,889,050
bushels. This :s a decrease of
40,444,934 bushels in two years, or
an approximation to one-half. It
is easy to see where this greut
trade has gone to. In the two
years referred to the imports of
wheat and Hour to Great Britain
from Russia and Koumania in
creased 38,704,005 bushels, or
nearly as much as the whole
amount of our loss. These figures
deserve attentive consideration
from Americans. They appear to
indicate the permanent transfer of
a great part of our grain trade to
our rivals in the eastern part if
Europe. The only hope that we
can regain it lies in the chance of
failure of the crops of Eastern Eu
rope or in the possibility of a
general war upon the Continent.
In the presence of such a fact as
this it becomes us to ascertain
quickly how we shall compensate
American farmers for this diminu
tion of the European demand for
their products. The most obvious
method of readjustment is to en
courage them to diversify their
industry to grow less wheat and
more of other things that may be
consumed at home. For example, !
there is no good reason why suyai- j
beet and sorghum culture should!
not engage the attention of eneti, h I
farmers to permit the decrease cf 1
wheat production t the dimensu na
uf the domestic demand.
Secuetaky Whitnev has ordered
j three dynamite torpedoes for tlie
use of the navy, at a cost of foa.OOO.
Those Samoan Germans better
watch a little out or they will be
torpedo strurk.
The suicide business for the
'lover" type of young men seems to
bv coming into vogue. Perhaps it
is a fashion of utility and com
mendable under the piinciple of
survival of the fittest. which in this
cases means that no fittest remains
to Mirvive.
