The Blueberry is a valuable fruit
and is reliable to prow in our Norti
ern states, where the more tender
f aricties of fruits winter-ki.l. It is
perfectly hardy, having stood 40 de
vices below zero without showing any
injury to the most tender buds. It
ripens in this latitude about the 1st of
July, and U borne in clusters like cur
rants; shape, round; t-olor, reddish
purple at first, but becomes a bl man
til a ck when fully ripened. The flavor
is equal to the raspberry, a very mi'd.
rich eub-acid, pronounced by most
people delicious. It may be served
with sugar and cream or cooked
sauce, and is splendid canned for
winter use The plant seems te
flourish ia all soils and is a prolific
bearer. It grows very stocky and
makes a nice hedge. The shining

Oregon has a woman mail-car
rier. Her name is Miss Minnie
Westraan, and she carries Unae
Sam's mail from the head of navi
gation on Siuslaw Kiver over the
Coast range mountains, following
up the river to Hales post-office
station, within fifteen miles o: hu-
gene City.
Her route is twenty miles long
and is situated right in the heart
ot the mountains, where all the
dangers and adventures incident to
such an occupation abound.
Mie carries the mail night and
day, and fears nothing. She rides
horseback and carries a trusty
revolver.
Miss Westman is a plump little
brunette and is just 20 years old.
Her father and uncle operate a
stage line, and have a contract for
carrying the mail. At Hale's
station he mee's her father and
ets the mail from Eugene City
aud starts ou her round.
