pedestrians are making good pro
gress in the six day match at the
Mechanicss' pavillion. Howarth
made the first fifty miles in seven
hours and thirty-eight minutes.
Gus Guerro, who was expected to
do good walking, was taken sick
after the first thirty-three miles,
and was off the track for several
hours. The score of the ten lead
ers at 9 o'clock this morning stood :

Last evening a messenger came
to town seeking Drs. Lewitt and
Wallsce, statins that George W.
Clyde bad met with a terrible ac
cident, huving been burned in a
brush fire. Dr. Lewitt answered
the call, and taund the injured
man at the borne of his brother on
California street. Upon examina
tion it was found that the right
to.it had been burned to a cr sp,
the bone protruding, and the leg
actually roasted clear to the bip.

not show the marks of the fire.
His hands were badly burned and
the right side was scratched. The
docter at ouce discovered that
Clyde was ptt86ed all human aid,
and that it was but a short time
before death would' claim him.
At 10 o'clock last evening George
Clyde breathed his last. Tue par
ticulars of the accident w i.l never
be known, as Clyde was unable to
talk and could not tell the talc.
He had recently purchased a piece
of land back f town, and at odd
times worked clearing. Yesterday
he went out ou the property to
work. Nothing more was known
until Borne boja playing in the
neighborhood discovered a man
lying oi his back and a fire burn
ing aronnd him. One of the boys
called some men who were work
ing near by aiid they came to the
retcue, fiauing that the man w hom
the boys had seen was none other
than George W. Clyde. The sup
