INCREASE OF POPULATION.
The Evening Telegram says that
the irrepressible statistician has
been at work again, and his latest
report is in regard fo the increase
in population in citizens and in the
country. He claims that America
lias a total population of 6,000,000
in her 350 cities. A century ago
there were but 100,0;)0 in the cities
showing the city population to ha e
increased sixty fold. At that time
the total population of the country
was 4,000,000, and now it is esti
mated at 00,000,000. The increase
is, therefore, but fifteen fold, show
ing that the cities have more
rapidly increased than the rural
, districts. This is due, of course, to
the manufacturing and commerce
development within the century.
In 1880 we had 280 cities with a
imputation of over 8000. One
hundred of these had less than
12,000; 131 had between 12,000 and
40,000, and the remaining forty-live
ran from 40,000 to 1,200,000. New
irk is now believed to have a
population exceeding 1,500.000.
Philadelphia has 1,000,000, ai.cl
Chicago, including her immediate
suburbs, probably has as many.
A curious feature of the building
f cities is tound in the fact that
few have grown to immense size
in spots which nature has seemed
to indicated as the proper place for
them. The most phenomenal
cities have sprung upas if by magic
in contradiction of the theory of
natural advantages.
DEPARTMENT OF AGRICUL
TURE. The present outlook is that
Ptesident Cleveland will not veto i
the law creating the Department i
of Agriculture, but will either sign ;
The attack on foreigners at Chin
Kiang Foo is probably due to the
priests or others who have made
the ignorant Chinese believe that
the la mine which has proved fatal
to so many is the work of Eu
ropeans. There is no question that
anti-foreign sentiment has been
stimulated in China recently by
those in authority,' as the young
Emperor is known to be very
hostile to foreigners.
The punishment of crime by j
incarceration in prisons, is thought I
by very many, not to meet the I
ends to which it is designed, that
is the protection of society and the
lessening of criminal action. In
Delaware the whipping post has
been revived with the result, it is
said, of decreasing crime, and it is
argued that a general adoption of j
thac kind of punishment would i
lead to good results in that direc- I
tion. !
