A QUESTION OF 1NEFFWENT
Al AILS OR WHAT.
It is perhaps not uninteresting
to know how a city like Ne York
gets its daily rations. The House
keeper says that the business of
producing and providing food for
mankind furnishes a livelihood to
a majority of the race. Generals
in command of armies of 20,000 or
50,000 men have been brought to
ignominious defeat and flight for
the lack of power to supply them
with food ; and yet a population ot
two and one-half million people in
and around New York is supplied
with food every day and for every
meal from all parts of the world.
Ten thousand head of cattle are
slaughtered every week to provide
New York with beef, and that is
not more than one-half the beef
that is consumed there. Some of
the beef comes in on foot ; the re.-t
in refrigerator cars from the West.
Swine are brought in dressed ; but
sheep are all killed in the citv. i mg Co. 's store
The greater part of the fresh fish
supply of the i ity comes in refri
gerator cars fiom Boston and
Gloucester; the rest comes to the
markets in fishing-boats. Enough
fish is kept ahead in the cold store
houses to last the city two or three
weeks. The vegetables come fiom
almost everywhere. Lettuce is
mainly brought from near Boston,
where one firm ships $100,000
worth of it each year. Enormous
amounts of celery come fr m '
Kalamazoo, Mich. The South
Coin claims have reached this
office that the package of papers
for Fox Valley, which goes via.
Turner and Meham.i, and is placed
iu the post office here on Thurs
day night and the postmaster in
forms as is sent North on the early
Friday morning tram, does not
roach its destination until the
middle of the next week, whereas
it should reach Fox Valley on
Saturday. Our subscribers tell us
that as a rule it does not get
through until Tuesday, while thc
Rock Creek package, going by
exactly the same route reaches
that office, as it nhouM, on Satur
day. We have written to the
proper officials in regard to the
matter but get no attention or cor
rection of the trouble. Other
pap rs go through in time, why
not ours? and why is it a regular
thing that our paper is delayed.

A. Warning.
The modes of death's approach are
various, and statistics' show conclusive
ly that more persons die from diseases
of the throat and lungthan auy other.
It is probable that everyone; without
! exception, receives fast p umber 6 of
! I ubeiclc uerms into tuff system and
where these germs fall upon suitable
soil they start into life and develop,
at first slowly and is shown by a
slight tickling tensatiao in the throat
a ad if allowed to continue their
ravages they extend to the luntrs pro
ducing consumption and to the head,
causing catarrh. Now 11 this is
dangerous and if allowed to proceed
will in time cause death. .At the onset
you must act with promptness; allow
ing a cold to go without attention is
duiitfcrous and may lose you your
life. As soon as you feel that some
thins: is wronff with yourthroat, lunsjs
or nostrils, obtain a bo) tie of Boschees
German Syrup. It wilt give you iu
mediate relief.
Worth Knowing.
Mr. W. H. Morgan, merchant, Lake
