Colonel 1 red uramt is out as
an applicant for Minister to China.
The Chinese government had al
ways Bhown an extraordinary in
terest in General Grant ; some of
the finest presents he ever received
came from the Celestials. Colonel
Grant felt assured that as the son
of General Grant he would receive
onusual ' attentions; and as the
mission is a fire t-class one an J the
salary $12,000, and the social re
quirements are not such as to make
a private income necessary to sup
plement the salary Colonel Grant
decided that the post of Minister
to China was the recognition which
he would ask from the Administra
tion. He has interested several
leading Republicans, and fully ex
pects to begin his official career be
fore the summer months have
come in Peking.
- The rumor that the Chinese
government as a retalitory measure
for the Scott exclusion bill, had
decided to exclude Americans from
China, and shut off trade witlr this
country is probably without founda
tion. The Chinese are far too
shrewd to attempt to shut out the
trade with this country while the
balance is heavily in their favor.
Mi ch comment has been made
upon the fact that the St. Paul,
Minn., people have been denied
their winter carnival and ice palace
this season ; but the inference may
be too previous, for a cold wave
has been coming on in that state
that may bring encugh of a snap
j to give them the ice palace before
th ? freeze is over.
Lovers of good coffee should tiy

, BUSINESS SUCCESS.
The road that leads to success in
business matters is the highway
that every intelligent young man
is seeking, and the axioms ' that
leads to it are the rules that every
person should inscribe in their
memories. An unknown writer
very truthfully lays down these.
Have but one business, know it
thoroughly and attend personally
I ) its minutest details. Be seli-re-liaut,
concentrate your energies in
a determination and supreme effort
to conquer success. Keep your
own counsel, attend strictly to
business,' and never dabble in any
thing foreign to it; curtail your
expenses, never sacrifice safety to
prospective large returns, cut short
your losses and let your profits run
on,' and make your prime movers
industry, economy, and fair deal-
ing. it is tiie merest rant ana
bosh to re.y on luck. He is always
indolent and whining, folding his
arms, drinking and smoking, wait
ing for big prizes in lotteries, or
lying abed expecting a legacy. On
the contrary, labor and pluck are
the invincible heroes who conquer
Miccess ; they strike out new paths,
create, eoutrive, think plan, orig
inate, take all legitimate risks, toil
iu surmount obstacles, push for
ward, win renown by success. The
glorious galaxy of successful busi
ness men and illustrious authors
have all been hard workers.' Shun
bad company and the prevalent
vices of the day, never loan a bor
rowing friend more than you are
able to lose if he cannot pay, and
never take a loan on importunity.
Never borrow money to speculate
with. Acquire knowledge. It is
only enlightened men who succesb
fully hold their own with the
surging masses who throng the
road to riches. Avoid law and
legal squabbles of every kind. In
discussing business agreements
keep cool. Make all the money
you can and do all the good you
can with It, remembering that ht
who lives for himself alone lives
for the meanest man in creation.
If engaged in public business, ad
vertise it ; be punctual in meeting
promised payments; keep shoit
account ; settle often ; be clear
and explicit in making bargains.
Be civil and obliging as well a
decisive and prompt with custo
mers, and do not overtrade your
capital. Finally, m the maturity
of life, don't rust out by retiring
from business; keep bright byust-
til effort, remembering that indus
try and happiness are inseparable.
Thk wise advice to keep out of
entangling alliances may well be
heeded in the Satuoan complica
tions. We have a coaling station
and enjoy commercial privileges
on those islands, and it may be a
matter of regret that the aim of
'Germany is evidently to gain com
plete supremacy there,- but noth
