CORPORA TIONS.
In considering the subject of
corporate (towers it is well enough
to remember the advantages that
accrue from them as well as the
evils, that have grown into use
through their organization and
operation. A cursorv view of the !
situation will convince any obser
ver that our advance civilization
and unexampled and prosperous
growth comes in reality from the
results of the work of corporations.
Our manufacturing enterprises
co lid not exist without them ; our
transportation facilities depend
entirely upon them, and even the
principal sources of our learning
and knowledge lies within their
sphere of action.
It will easily be seen that they
have so completely grown into the
web and woof of our existence,
both personal and national, that
they are essential for life and pros-
Tna Pacific Farmer commends
the recommendation of Governor
Pennoyer, that the railroad com
mission be abolished, on the
grounds that President of the
Senate Simon instigated, and se
cured the passage of the bill in the
first place, and therefore it cannot
be good. It is a fact that success
ful railroad control is only accom
plished by the commission plan,
and as our present law reaches
liat end at least, hang to it and
correct its defects no matter who
was the author of the bill. It is
th higth of folly to condemn a
thing because some certain person
had a hand in its conception, and
it is the course of wisdom to go on
with what lias already been gained
rather than throw away what is
done to t:o over the same ground
again. j
The assurance o Delegate Caine
oi man, in standing up in congress
and claiming that "there was
nowhere to be found a body of
jeople so generally intelligent and
well-ir.formed, and whose natural
tendency was independence of
thought," is somewhat of the gov
ernment mule quality of cheek,
when it is a well known fact that
the recruits to the Mormon church
have been drawn from the most
ignorant classes of people, and
that in no other organization is the
dominance of leaders as apparent
as it is in that church. Upon the
ignorance of the masses of the
membership is such dominance
always predicated.
The legislators assembled at
Salem are earnest in the matter of
giving the state a better assess
