Witchcraft In Vermaaj.
A belief in witchcraft still pre
vails in the agricultural commun
ities of Germany, as the following
incident shows: "A farmer lost
seveml head of cattle within a tew
months, and his family agreed that
this could only be tbe result of
witchcraft, exercised by a neighbor
with whom they were not on very
friendly terms. A miller from the
yicinity, far-framed for his power
over evil sp-.nts, wa consulted, and
ordered the doors to be painted
with a certain oiutmeot. The evil
doer be said would only be kept
from further mischief by having
his or her nose squeezed between
the door and jamb until tbe mem
ber ws crushed. The first person
who entered was the neighbor's
wife who was duly captured, and
who, through the attempt at crush
ing her nose was unsuccessful, re
ceived some serious wounds on tbe
head in ber attempt to escape her
torturers."

pose that Americans spend more
in advertising than do the business

Americans spend more wisely and
get more display for their money,
hut the actual sums expended bv
English advertisers exceed th'te

English firm alone spent last yer
at least $500,000 in advertising one
commodity. Two hundred nl
seventy-five thousand dollars of
this money was disbursed in
Eoglaud and $150,000 of it in this
country, the balance elsewhere.
They get more display out of the
$140,000 spent here thnn out of the
$275,000 spent in England. No
American firm can equal this le
cord of expenditure, which tenor a
solitary instance, but will be re
peuttd by the came firm this year,
aud may be for years to come "
