San Tkancisco, Jan. 10. The
fight which occurred at the tfolden
Ciate Athletic Club last night be
tween lightweights Billy Mahan,of
California and George Mulholand.
of Australia, was the longest ever
seen on this coast. The battle
commenced at 9 :40 o'clock and con
tinued until 3:25 this morning,
when it was declared a draw, at
the close of the eighty-seventh
round, by Joe McAuliffe, recently
defeated by Peter Jackson, who
was re eree. Throughout the fight
Mul hoi land showed himself super
ior in science and quickness, but
Malian exhibited qualities of game
an a hard fighter. About the
fiftieth round it seemed almost cer
tain that Mulholand would win, as
he had been punished very little,
while Marian's lips and cheeks
were badly swollen. His eyes
were nearly closed and be had lo.st
one tooth by coining in contact
with the Australian's head. How
ever Mulholland did not seem able
to give the knockout blow, and dur
ing the last two hours of the fight
Mahan was as fresh as his antag
onist and administered some severe
punishment to Miillholand's wind.
Both siopjied and fell to for several
minutes during the battle.
A clean knock out was in the
liftv-sccond louml, when Mulhol
and was sent u.ider the rojies by a
terrific blow in the stomach. Alter
it liecaine apparent that neither of
the men was likclv to be knocked
out there was numerous demands
for a draw and the referee linallv
consented to the proposition, after
the battle had lasted five hours
and three-c,uarters and when both
men were too weak to strike an ef
fective blow.

. The recent death of the Hon.
John Wentworth (Long John as he
was usually called) of Chicago and
the late presidential campaign,
reminds us of an amusing incident
of early political doings, which
was well told in the Chicago Times
some ten years since and is worth
reproducing.
Politics about 1840 had an edge
to it that has since been worn off,
and when nien in those days were
opposed to each other politically,
they felt in .duty b und to regard
themselves as personal enemies.
The last of this bitterness worked
itself out in the flings of "aboli
tionists" and 'copierheads" and
now politics has sunk what Car
lyle would call the "eternal in
anities." It is well to let it re
main there.
One tine morning it became
rumored about the young city that
Martin Van Buren, who had just
stepped out of the White house,
and was on a tour of sight seeing
with certain members of what had
been his cabinet, would pay a visit
to Chicago. Of course the town
was all agog at the news, and until
the event became a matter ot his
tory, was the one and all-absorbing
topic of conversation among the
gossips of evenings as they congre
gated to whittle the dry goods
boxes that lined tiie principal
streets.
The democrats as a matter of
course, were jubilant, but the
whigs were mad as hornets and
the leaders laid awake o' nights to
conjure up something that would
serve as a dampener on the coming
festivities. Amonr the democrats
a great celeor-i.ioii was decided
upon. Long Joiiu, who was begin
ning to loom up more ways than
one, in tho.se days, had given the
order, and aii .-iort Joints fcere
running their legs ell to see that it
was carried out. A number of
meetings were held, committees
weie appointed, a delegation was
advanced as far as Ottawa to meet
the distinguished guest and party,
and extend a formal invitation,
while another and far more preten
tious body, was organized to mount
themselves on horseback, at the
proper time repair to Bridgeport,
and act as an escort to the distin
guished party into town.
The lying awake of the whigs in
the meantime had resulted in an
idea, and some of the "boys" were
not slow in putting it into practice.
Free lunch sauer kraut layouts
were comparatively quite as nu
merous then as they are now, and
the article was held in no better
repute by many folks then than it
is at the present. Fven as in
these days, in those it had an
ancient ami lish-like smefi, to
which one mus: he brought up Vt
be endurable. To make a Jong
story short, the whigs had decided
on defeating the celebration by
stinking it out, and sauer kraut
hal been hit upon as the most
effective means lor accomplishing
tlieir purpose. Accordingly a del
egation set itself on foot lo inter
view various free lunch spreaders,
to secure a proper amount of the
desired article.
Among other places they dropped
into a beer shop on Randolph street
where the following conversation
ensued :
Delegation "Say 'boss, got anv
fa ier kraut ?"
Teutonic Beer Vender Veil, no,

It is now time to leave the
schciuin" w ni;s and return to the
jubilant democrats, who have de
cided on holding a great jollifica
tion in the public square, then an
open giass plat, and with a view of
making tilings more cozy about
there, they determined to surround
it w.i.: a fence and ornament the
center with a rostrum. There
l eiit;.' no common party fund to
dra.. ; -m, ew-rv pioiuineat "un-
washed" was invited to "chip in." '
Some donated boards, others nails,
still "others their labor, while the
bulk gave their share in money. ,
Thus out of the pride of party and
the occasion a fence was born and .
a glorious rostrum created, whicfe
gorgeously f-stooued and banner
hung, was by all odds the hand
somest thiug that had ever been
seen in the town. The work, was
all completed the night before the '
day which was lo fee the ex-presi ; .
dent enter Chicago, and ye t.
democracy, feeling that their work
had been well done, retired uu- .
suspicious to their downy couches, -in
order to be up betimes in the
morning to escort his ex-excel- -lency
into town.
While Long John and his com
patriots were sound . asleep the '
w biggish cohorts were w'de awake,' "
and about midnight might have
been seen making their way to the
domicile of the Randolph street
beer vender, who was also custo
dian of the much coveted sauer
kraut.
They dropped into his place just
as be w as about to close up tor the
night and remarked that they had
conn; to take their purchase.
Veil, py dam, I is glad you
come to dake dem tarn stuff away,
for it tooks like it be alive and run
all ober my cellar. (Jolly, but it
shtinks, and I tells you again, you
mustn't plame me if dem fellars
to morrow won't eat it, but 1 telU
you lietorehand now that it's
ohpiled."
A moment later a dray drove up
to the door, tbe kraut was drawn
up out of the basement and away
it went for the public square,
where the heads of the barrels were
knocked in and the contents
judiciously and evenly spread out
under the rostrum. This done,
the whigs went to their homes,
with clear consciences and the sat
isfaction of a party duty well per
formed. Tbe i-uii didn't rise very
gloriously the next inori.iug. In .
lact it rained during the early
hours, and the dampness that
chilled t'ne ex-president and his
escort, plodding their way in car
riages and on horseback from
Biidgepoit, also had the effect of
making heavy the atmosphere
about the rostrum and as a matter
of course, of intensifying the ier
tume of the fcauer kraut.
About noon there was a clearing;
of the sky, and the ex-president's
party, who iiad been holding a re-
ception at the City hotel, were now
invited to the public square for a
grand demonstration. A proces
sion meanwhile had been parading
the streets, and about the time
Van Buren, under Long John's
wing, reached the grounds, the
unterririeJ in line also came up,
and in a few moments the square
presented an exceedingly animated
appeaiance.
But what ails those good people,
and especially the ladies on ihu
ro-bum? Has the morning's damp
given them a cold? It must be so,
or why this universal application
of the handkerchief to the nose?
Loan, lank Long John seems t be
the only one ho is not aware that
there is something the matter, so
full is he with the occasion, anJ at
the earliest opportunity draws him
self up to his full height, and in a
fl rid address introduced the hon
ored guest to his admiring fellow
citizens.
Shrewd observers and esj.ecially
whig observers, have beeu noticing
for some time that Mr. Van Buren
is particularly ill at ease, and won
ders if he wid come to time with
his speech
Long John having concluded his
eulogy, turns to the great man, and

without some humor in his eye,
