An iu-onraffinir fact tor AlbaDV in

last fall when actioa was taken
upon the matter by the citizens of

and accepted the proposition oi
Mr.O. A.C'ass aad wealthy Chicago
syndicate to ouild the raid from
Albany to conacct with tho Asto

line of the route will be from the I

toll gate. T.i ilnc would follow
the natural water courses of this
country, leaving them at no place
over one half mile. The line
would tollow Alder Creen to its
junction with 1 hree um-rs; down
Three Rivers to Big Isestucca; up
the INestucca to the mouth of
Beaver Creek; up Beaver Creek to
its forks: up the west fork of Cedar
cretk to Tillamook river. Tht
country is almost level
From tbat point it is a Ice I or
rolling country for many miles,
crossing the lrasK, Wilson auu
Kilchis rivers, thence around the
east bhore of Tillamook bay to the
Miami river, up this river some six
miles, thence across the divide of
Foley creek. This divide will
probably require a 1 per cent
graue. The survey should continue
down Fo)ey creek to the south
fork of the Nehalem rier, crossing
this river following dowu otieum
to the north fork, up the north
fork to Buchanan's place, thence
across a low divide to flattie or
N'.'kauikum creek, thence dowu
ihe Nekanikum to the seaside,
thence across the Clatsop plains .o
Astoria. This route has many ad
vantages over any other leading to
Astoria; first, as to distance.
Fiom Albany to AstoTia by section
lines, via Tillamook, it is G4 miles
west and 110 miles north. From
Albany to Portland it is 21 miles
east and 02 north ; Portland to
Astoria is 48 mites noi ih and 58
miles west, showing a balance of
departure of 42 miles iu faror of
the Tillamook route, and the align
ment would surely be better than
by way of the Columbia.
The grades wculd be very light.
Crosbiiig the Coast rauge would

li view of the action already
t-tkn by t, npnn'o ot Astoria and
Tillamook, it would certainly be
onovt' the citizens of Albany to nt
least '!ik some sens toward aid
rnr th; project of building the
voad to A b tny. As the ultimate
object is to connect with the Or-t-oii
Pacific railroad, this city
would be the natural juuctioa of
the two iiue-, as it offers superior
facilities by being already the
center of three important railroad
lines.
The people of Astoria and Clat
hop couniy are wideawake and
stirring in this matter, and, while
the best oi feeling prevails toward
Albany as the terminus, the peo
ple of Astoria will and do expe-.-t
the substantial assistance from
Albany. Let (he people of Al
bany wake up now to a trr.a under
standing and real interest in this
mutter, for it w 11 not only be the
very making of Albany, but it will
m:Ke Astoria the seaport city for
this whole country and the cargoes

wiil be free for she will then have a
oe;t line trout ocean to ocean
across the entire continent. This,
a will be plainly seen, will double
and thribble the advantages of
Albany as she will then have two
outlets to the sea, the ports of
Yaijiiina and Astoria, giving her
access to the golden region of Cal
ifornia on the south and the grand
hi lden treasures of Washington

Some facts concerning the pioneer
glassware, crockery and fancy goods
establishment of Julius Gradwhol
will not be uninteresting to the gen
eral reader. He has'.beeu engaged in
this business for 30 years, and has a
store, which, for size and excellence
of its stock, is hot surpassed by any
in the state of Oregon, and is a credit
to Albany. He is steadily increasing
his business, and with the growth ot.
Albany and the advancement of the
country tributary to it, he is reach
ing out after a jobbing and wholesale
business. With the beginning of the
new year he proposes to add to his
mammoth stock of general crockery
ware, porcelain and glassware, fancy
goods, etc., a complete line of family
groceries. Mr. Gradwhol is one ot
the city's enterprising citiwns, and is
a member of the city council from
the second ward. During his thirty
years' experience he has found that
the cash bat is is the best and most
satisfactory mode of doing busiuess
for both purchaser and dealer. - By
this method and by purchasing goods
direct in large quantities he if enabled
to sell for very low j. rices. The pub
lic should call and inspect his im
mense stock for the iew year and
learn his prices.

The people of that portion of
Grant county in which is included
ihe mining districts of Granite,
Cabell s liobinsouvi.le, and North
Fork, art circulating a petition
which is being numerously signed
for presentation to the forthcoming
session of the legislature praying
that body to be annexed to Baker
county. There is every reason
why this should be done. The
districts mentioned, while being
situated within the boundaries of
Grant county are nearer by m any
miles to the county seat of Baker
county than to that of Grant
county, and their every interest is
identified with Baker county. The
strip of territory is exclusively a
mining section and is tributary to
Baker City, to which point it would
be a great saving in expense to
mine owners when necessity re

It Abrogation.
New York, Jan. 4. A local
paper prints a statement that Collis
P. Huntington, through A. A.-Low,
asked the chamber of commerce
yesterday to favor the amending
or abrogation of the Chinese ex
clusion bill.
Hu.itington, in a long letter, pro
tested that the bill is injurious to
;ne commercial relations of the two
countries. ' Huntington does not
believe tlu.t honest people in
America are opposed to the Chi
nese trade, which, he says, is fall
ing off with China because of the
bill, and besides there is no reason
why the Chinese should not re
taliate. In that event, he adds,
the American trade now drifting to
England and other powers would
be altogeter' lost. Huntington
further eays the measure was the
result of a partisan pressure and a
political device.
"Is not this," he concludes, "a
heavy price to pay lor the hoodlum
vote of California. For I believe
the fanatical hostility to industrious
Chinaman is limited to California,
whe;.j ,he Irish Catholics swing
the balance oi power."
