A Cane With a History Interwoven With
Pioneer Remiuisceoces of the State.
In lS3:i Dr. J. L. Hill, of Albany
crossed the plains in an ox wagon
taking six months to make t. it
trip. He had not since been east
of the Kockies until two years ago
this winter, when he took a busi
ness trip through some of the
eastern and southern states, mak
ing the journey in live and one
half days that once took six
months. While east he found
many tilings to enjoy and admire,
but on his return he said there
was but one Oregon, and that was
the garden sjMjt of America, and
he wanted his share of it. To
prove his "faith by his gojd w orks"
lie added two more farms to his
possessions in the Willamette
valley, ami declared hinitelf a
permanent fixture of Linn county.
The late W. 11. McFarland. who
was also a linn believer in Oregon's i
I future prosjerity, while on a t rip
to the southern part of the state
nent out on the bights of Jackson
county, and cut an elegant man
zanua stick, or Oregon mahogany
as it is sometimes called, which he
presented to the doctor as a token
of friendship, knowing that the
recipient's enthusiasm for his own
state would add greatly to his ap
preciation of the gift.
Mr. ti. L. Blackmail, one of the
leading business men ot" this city,
who came here a few years since
from the east, is also an enthusiast
