Albany has the lust supply of
wat er for manufacturing purposes of
any town in the valley. Tins water
is obtained from the Santiam river,
which is one of largest water courses
of this part of the state. The stream
empties its waters into the W illam
ette, below the city of Albany, and is
...;,kL fr a distance inland 01
about twelve miles from its mouth.
The Santiam makes a more rapid
tltsceut as it nears the en.l of its
course than ?oes U12 Willamette, and
the result is that the stream furnishes
au abundant supply of water for all
purposes of manufacture if tapped
i:!and fifteen miles or more from its
mouth. The availability of this.sup
uly was early brought to the attention
of the lari;e property owners f Al
liany, and a stock company was form
ed for the purpose of bringing this
water into the city. The :ost of com
pleting this important work was far
in excess of the first estimates, and
the result wvs that a loan of 3o,0U0
ws affected by the promoters of thr
hclieme with Mr. John Crawford, oue
jf tne U-adinj capitalists of tlio val
ley. On tin: completion of the im
portant piece of work the compati

The water of this river is brought
to Albany by means of a canal, which
tips the Santiam river at a poiu:
fourteen miles east of the city. Th
topography of the country so favored
its construction, that the canal is prac
tically straight, it having b'.-en foiitui

whatever. This eatiai is tweuty feol
wide at the bottom and is three ieet
deep. Tltre is a uniform fall fur
for most of the diatance from the
Santiam river to Alo.uiy of four feft
to the mile. At some parts of the
distance between these two points,
however, the canal is only twelve
feet wide at the bottom, and over
f'lis part of t li? distance the fall is
ten feet to the mile. Just.sonth of
the city the canal divides into two
eotial branches, one vmptying into
the (alipoia and the other into the
Willamette. The former branch fur
nishes a head of thirty-two feet,
while the branch emptying into the
main river gives a woiking head ot
thirty-six feet.
The importance of this power to
the town tvill be appreciated when it
is stated that the capacity ot tin
canal is "20,000 running feet per min
ute. From the point in the city
limits where the west branch ot the
canal empties into the Calipooia, t.
the point of the junction ot the canal
with the Willamette is a distance o:
over a mile, and for this entire inter
vening distance the banks of the Wil
lamette are high, affording excellent
rites for manufacturing purposes.
At any point within these limits a
working iead uf from 2.1 to Ho feet ot
water can be obtained from this conal,
and even beytnd t,ie lower mouth or.
the canal water can be carried down
' the river, for a distance of at least
oue-half mile further, and this watei
can be made equally as available foi
the purposes of manufacture. In au
di ion to these splendid opportunities

manufacturing purposes desired, at ;
point a quarter of a mile oiith of Al
bany there is a fall in the same cana
