bideration of the pending litigation
with the M. E. Church South for
the control and possession of the
state college, it was unanimously
determined that the board continue
vigorous to defend the lights of
the state to the exclusive college
and to the property. The regents
are confident that upon the rir.al
trial of -the case t'nev will show
I that thev are entitled to the. col
lege both upon the law and upon
the merits of the case. The board
will request that the governor to
recommend appropriations for the
erection of suitable buildings for
the experiment station, in w hich
instruction may be given in dairy-
mg, household economy, including
I cooking, preserving, and arming
j fruits, butter and cheese making.

who have been developing the

in connection with Salem gentle
men, located and worked & claim
that they valued very highly. Ue

j that Dr. E. O. Smith, with a party

and found rich deposits. They con-
j ordered these rumors as bemg proo-

company, who had been working
on the claim came in and reported
that Dr. Smith had induced them
to leave the claim, under a prom
ise of coming to Albany with them
and amicably settling the legal

! that was simpiy to get and hold

General Manager Uoag, of the
Oregon I'aeific railroad, is en route
for Corvallis again. He states that
the steamer Vaquina City, that
went ashore at Yaquina bay, has
not been abandoned in the full
souse of the term.
Although she
is now under charge : the under
writers, it does not release or pre-1
vent him from exerting an effort to
raise her. Whitelaw, the wrecker, j
with some of his best men have I
also left for Yaquina. Mr. IToagj

cisco. The Oregon Pacific Company is
easting about for a new steamer,

Held to Answer.
Lewis Taylor, whose shooting
propensity brought him to griet,
was arraigned before Justice Hum
phrey yesterday on two charges for
assault with a dangerous weapon
and held to answer to the grand
jury in each charge under $250
bonds.
Died.
Mr. James Long, an old and re
spected citizen of Linn county who
lived near Halsey, died on Thurs
day of this week.
