Mr. P. II. Bowman has left at
this ofli'-e some tine specimens of
tobacco raised on his farm near
this city. Some of it was nicely
cured, and one plant, which was a
second growth and still green, was
seven tet high. The first crop
was small and finely flavored. Mr.
Bowman thinks that bv planting
the right variety excellent tobacco
can be raised in Oregon.

On ths 'Death of Yo.-ng Liathers. the Biahe j

Harkisijcro, Nov. 28.
At the instigation of the K. K.
company a corners inquest was
held over the remains of young
Leathers, who was killed" last
evening by the freight train, and a
nice casket was furnished for the
remains, which was taken to the
home of the deceased in East Port
land on the early morning train.
The verdict of the jury was to- the
effect that the deceased came to
his death by accidently falling from
the train. The body was horriblv
mutilated and pieces ot" Hesh and
bones were found along the track
for quite a distance. We learn
that tlie young man had but t hree
days previous to tlie accident
taken the place of young Van Kan
kin, who was thrown from the
train near Jefferson. Chas. Canter
has taken tlie place ma le vacant
by this terrible accident.

commodious lunch counter, where

I degree. Miller is seventeen years
of age, and was on trial for the

Arrangements for beginning
work on the north jetty at

tion. Wharf privileges at Newport
are being negotiated for where
barges can land for the
work. From the wharf a railway
is to be constructed around the
beach to the end of the iettv. and
j the right of way for this is "to be
secured. The old light house prop
erly the point below Newport has
been ordered turned over to the
engineers by the lighthouse board.
The jetty will run out 2J500 feet,
which will bring the ends of the
two jetties opposite each other, and
there will be an entrance between
them 1000 feet wide.
The Presidential Klertor.
According to the new law the
presidential electors will no- tnent
at the state capital until January
14th.at 12 rn., instead of on Dec.oth
as heretofore stated. On the
above mentioned day C. XV. Fulton, !
William Kapus and Robert Mc
Lean, presidential electors for
Oregon, will meet in Salem and
proceed to vote bv ballot for presi
dent and vice-president, of the
United States. They will also
select from their number one to
act as messenger to Washington.
It is needless to say that thevwill
cast their votes for Harrison and
Morton.

the annual election in and for the
city of Albany, Linn county, Oregon,
will be held on Monday, the 3d day of
December. A. D. 1MSS, for the purpose
of electing the followinjr municipal
olliccrs, to-wit: Marshal, Treasurer
and three councilmen, one from each
ward in said city.
The pulling places will be as follows:
