Some of- the New York dailies, always desirous oi creating a sensation, are just now discussing the question of extending the term of president from four to eight or twelve years, and they are actively parading the cost of an election to the people. This is being done perhaps partly in earnest, but principally to merely furnish an interesting topic to talk about, for there are no reasons to believe that the people of this country have any inclination io exchange our pres ent form of government for cne more English. No doubt there is a great deal of money expended every four years and considerable mental wear and tear. But the fault-finders ignore the obvious advantages to the country which results from the people taking sn active interest in its affairs. If Americans ever seriously entertain the belief that peace and quiet and economy are of more consequence than the so-called election turmoil and extravagance, the Republic will be near the end of its tether and the people will be ready to accept a despotic form of govern ment which avoids all the little I drawbacks of free institutions.
