It Will Be Frosecut-. d Vigorously
"Winter The Proposed Krth Jetty,
The Yaquina liepublican, a new
paper started on the bav, savs that
the government work there is to be
prosecuted all winter with renewed
vior.
About ten days ago the board of
engineer inspectors visited Yaquina
bay and investigated the work be
ing done on the jetty and also
iewed the ground where it is pro
posed to construct tne jetty on the
north side. The result ol their
visit is that work will hi continued
without stoppage this season.
Capt. Willard Young, of tiie en-j
gineer corps, arrived from Portland
iuesday evening and will remain
there several days perfecting the
preliminaries for commencing
work on the north jetty. A crew
of men will lie put at work as soon
as tiie arrangements are comple
ted. A crew of men will be kept
at work on the south jetty for live
or six weens ruling in more rocks.
The greatest drawback to fast
work seems to be the ditiiculty 6i
getting a suilicient quantity oi
good rock, but it is thought that
this will be overcome by opening a
new quarry. That the work is to
be continued without a lay off" for
several months will be welcome
news to all who are interested in
the improvement of Yaquina bay,
and the decision of the officials in
charge to push matters is sensible.
By early spring the work ran be so
far advanced that the north jetty
can be pushed well out on the bar
bv next fall.

The State Will Get $270,000, the Militia
$18,000 and the University $9000.
Gov. Pennoyer says that the
state board, consisting of himself.
Secretary of State McBride and
State Treasurer Webb, will meet in
Salem early this week to levy a
state tax.
The assessment rolls of the dif
ferent counties show" the .valuation
1 of taxable property in the state to
be about $90,000,0110. as compared
with $84,888,580 last vear, an in
crease of over f",000",000. The
total tax will be mills, of
which .5 mills will be for state pur
poses, two-tenth of a mill for the
militia and one-tenth, for the uni
versity of Oregon. Last year the
state tax was 4." mills and the
militia and university taxes the
same as this vear.

Conductors and trainmen on the
0. it C. railroad are pestered by
hordes of tramps, who are now
winging their way south like other
birds of passage. One sf these fel
lows on being asked by a con
ductor where he was trying to get
to, said : "I'm off' to California (or
the winter. It is too wet in Ore
gon to make sleeping in a straw
stack comfortable. I shall be bar k
along this way in the spring if my
health is good." As the train
started out he seized one of the
long truss rods under a Pullman
and sw ung himself in a ''comforta
ble" position on a brake-beam, and
pursued his journey. There are a
few tramps coming north, but the
majority are bound south, ami
! lonr mav thev keep headed in that
direction. Albany, being the busi
ness center of the Wi.'lamette Val
ley, is just now infested with these
fellows.

Last week Mr. John A. Olsson,
of Newport, gave a bond ior a deed
to block 25, in favor of Kev. Win.
II. Gross, archbishop of the Cath
olic diocese of Oregon. The con
ditions of the bond are as follows:
The church society is to; build a
goori ami substantial church build
ing not to cost less than .floOO, to
he completed within one year from
date. Also the society is to build
within three years a school build
ing and conduct therein a sisters'
school. One hundred dollars was
paid on the bond. When the con-
ditions of the bond have been ful
filled, Mr. Olsson is to make a war
rantee deed of the block. This
will be a valuable addition to Ya
quina bay.

A lady, while passing along the

city last evening, felt- a bullet
whistle by uncomfortably close to

ped a serious-accident is likely to

about the same, only it has heavy
timber in the place oi sage brush,
and that you can't sell or give
awav. except it is located close bv
some big town, and then it costs
tive times as much to clear it as it
is worth. The soil is as streaked
as a jail bird's pants; mostly of
thin creek gumbo, and then some
sandy loam and gravel. They
raise cheat and oats hay for feed
principally; no corn or clover to
speak of. The fruit and vegeta
bles are so cheap "you cannot get
enough for them to pay you to
haul them to market. Everything
else is much higher than in Kan
sas ; wages n.o better than there.
There are some places 1 could get
4 to r5 a day with my team, but
would have to pay $8 a week for
board, 2 and 3 cents per pound for
hay and oats, 15 and 20 (tents tor
sugar. So vou see the uig money
to be made here. ' !
In Idaho and "Wyoming they
raise nice truck by irrigation, but
there is no place like Kansas for a
home; or for coru, hogs, cattle and
horses. Farmers are not making
money here; it is the towns that
are booming this country.

the annual election in and for the
city of. Albany, Linn county, Oregon,
will -be held on Monday, the 3d day of
December. A. D. 18-SS, for the purpose
of electing the following municipal
officers, to-wit: Marshal, Treasurer
and three councilmen, one from each
ward in said city.
The polling places will be as follows:
First ward, county clerk's office; sec
ond ward, county treasurer's office;
third ward, fanners' warehouse office
