THE Olio Will ol- PETROLEUM
USE.
The wonderful strides with which
coal oil , as it is commonly called,
has made in the domestic economy
of nations, are unexampled in a.l
of the other productions of iirt and
nature. It drives out nearly all
other illuminating substances, as a
general means of illumination
throughout the country, besides
the many other uses to which the
crude article, petroleum, is put to.
These facts make the future prom
inence of the article in the com
merce of nations of perament
importance, and ;he control of it
by our nation a disideratum. It
may be of interest to know who are
rivals are in this great production.
A gentleman in Paris who signs
. himself M. de Tchihatchief,- whom
it would probably be safe to take j 0ri according to the Astonan Trans
for a Russian, has a striking article j cr.pt, are experiencing no difficuky

the production of kerosene. Such
abatement may properlv be made i

from his confident predictions on
account of the unconcealed parti- j
san bias with which he writes ; and i
his figures leave something to be

consistency and recentness, but
what he has to say is nevertheless
well worth the attention of our oil
producers. He makes it evident,
in the first place, that the only
rival of the United States at prea
sent in sight is Russia. Following
a late French estimate of
the '
world's production of petroleum,
putting the total at 100,000,000 !
hectoliters, it appears that the !
1 r I
United States furnish (54,000,000, !
Russia 25,000,000. and all other'
' ' i
countries only 11,000,000. In fact, ;
while deposits of oil have been :
, . , , .,
totind in many parts ot the earth
a in Burmah, China, Persia,
Egypt, New Zealand, and most of ,
the European countries their ex- '
tent is so limited and difficulty ot ;
rm.-rar.mil s.. -rear, that the race ;
has narrowed down to the two
contestants named. The principal
oil fields of "Russia are found within
a limited territory. The famous
wells are almo-t all situated in the
pensnsula of Aspheron, which rui.s
out into the Caspian Sea at a point
not far from the Southern Russian
boundary. Baku is the port
whence shipments are made. Tlie
great natural advantages of the
Baku field are the compact teiri
tory to be worked, the small depth
of the wells, and their great steadi
ness of fiovv. The whole area
worked dues not exceed 1,100
square miles. Set this over against
the area estimated for the United
States 571 ,240 square miles and
t e richness of the Russian wells,
which produce at least one-third
as much as those of the United
S ates, will be at once perceived.
The depth of the 'wells runs frcm
120 to 540 feet. One famous well
is but ::$ teet deep, vet out of it

the oil jets up to tne neignt oi .mo
feet. M. de Tchihatchief asserts;
. '
also that die average flow m the
Baku region is 88,000 pounds per
dav. as against 25,300 in the United
- ,
orates.
