WHICH IS THE BETTER HA IF.
The question involved in the
assumption that man and wife aie
one, which is sometimes expressed
a 3 being to ascertain which is that
one, is a subject that receives much
consideration and discussion, and
one too, that is worthy of careful
consideration, in as much as it in
volves the destiny, welfare growth
and development of all future
generations. Prof. L. F. Waj d
has been giving the subject a care
ful and full investigation and
elucidates many thoughtful and
convincing conclusions. As a
s iquence of his observations ard
reasonings, as well as that of
learned philosophers of the past
and present, he concludes that the
physical, mental and moral welfare
of human beings depends more
upon woman than upon man ; that
in reality it is plainly discernible
that the female, as far as human
development and attainment is
concerned, is the superior sex and
not the inferior as the traditions of
mankind has held. In conclusion
he say: "But we have learneu
even more than this, that which is
certainly of mere practical value.
We have learned how to carry for
ward the progress of development
so far advanced by the unconscions
agencies of nature. Accepting
evolution as we must, recognizing
heredity as the distinctive attri
bute of the female sex, it becomes
i-lear that it must be from the
steady ailvar.ee of woman rather
than from the uncertain fluctua
tions of man that the sure and
solid progress of the future is to
come. The attempt to move the
whole race forward by elevating
only the sex that represent the
principle of instability, lias long
enough been tried. The many
cases of superior men and the sons
of superior mothers, coupled with
the many more cases of degenerate
sons of superior sires, have taught
us over and over again that the
Wav to civilize the race is to civil
ize woman. And, now, thanks lo
science, we see why this is so.
Woman is the unchanging trunk l
the great genealogic tree; while
man, with all his vaunted guperi
ority, isjbut a branch, a grafted
scion, as it were, who;e acquired
qualities die with the individual,
while those of woman are handed
iown to futuritv. Woman is the
race, and the race can be raised up
only as she is raised up. There is
no fixed rule by which nature has
intended that one sex should exc. 1
the ether, any more than there is
any fixed point beyond which
either cannot further develop.
Nature has no intentions, and evo
lution has no limits. True science
teaches that the elevation of wo
man is the only sure road to the
evolution of man."

The attempted bank robbery at
Lebanon is one of the boldest and
most intricate laid schemes ever
perpetrated in this portion of the
state. The.idea of running a tun
nel 60 feet long under two build
ings and working for wteks, and
perhaps months, to get into a bank
and to be fooled only by tie per- j
fection of the burglar box of the .
safe, savors more of a New York J
crime, than the work of the aver
age Oregon burglar.
