A Moderate Audience at the Court House
Last Sight.
Hon. L. B. Cox, a very pleasant
gentleman and good speaker, ad
dressed a moderate size'i audience
at the court house last night.
Nothing new upon the subject was
presented, as every phae that
could be enunciated has already
been conned over until every per
son is familiar with it. The gen
tleman handled the subject from a
democratic standpoint.

Tne Register says: Hon. J. M.
Stafford has presented us with an
apple measuring 18 inches in cir
cumference, and weighing
pounds. It is of the gloramundi
variety, and caps anything for size
that has yet appeared.
Store Burned. Last Monday
night the store of Mr. Jamei; Parvin
of Dexter, caught fire and burned
to the ground. The cause of the.
the is unknown. Mr. Parvin had
just returned from Portland, where
lie had been purchasing his sup
plies for the winter. The fire was
not discovered until the pow der in
the store exploded, which demol
ished the building.
Change on the .No.-diern Pacific.
President Oakes, of the Northern
Pacific, has just issued a circular
which states that subdivision ter
minal facilities originally estab
lished at Heron, Mont., having
been, for economical considerations,
removed 230 miles to Hope, I. T. ;
the line between those points will
be added to the Rocky Mountain
division and operated as a part
thereof on and after November
1st, proximo. The superintendent
of the Rocky Mountain division
will on that date assume charge of
the line thus transferred, under
the direction of assistant general
manager of the middle division.
The terminal facilities at Hope will
remain in the jurisdiction of the
superintendent of the Idaho di
vision. News.

George B. Markle, Jr., arrived
back earl' in the week from a visit
to the Cu-ur d'Alene mines, in the
vicinity of Wardner. He leports
that the mines are veritable hives
of industry and the earmarks of
prosperity can be seen every wheie.
Though the prosperity is large at
present,itwill be greatly augmented
in the spring when the O. R. it N.
and Northern Pacific lines reach
the heart of this great mineral
belt. He reports further that the
Portland has $15,000 worth of ore
on the dump ami that the Sierre
Nevada, Stemwinder and other
mines are doing finely and turning
out an enormous quantity of ore.

Improving the Channel.
The government snag puller
came up the river yesterday morn
ing, anil is operating on the chan
nel at this city. It was engaged
yesterday in removing snags from
the mouth of the Calapooia below
the Magnolia flouring mills. It
will, after completing the work
here, go up the river, removing
dangers to navigation as far up as
Ilarrisburg.
Ah Expensive Cow.
In the case of Geo. Luper
against the O. & C. railroad, in
which the plaintiff" was awarded
$35 damages, the attorneys for the
road yesterday took judgment
against the plaintiff for the costs,
in accordance with the law, which
giyes them that right in canes
where a verdict of as small a sum
as $.'55 is awarded. The costs will
amount to more than the value of
the cow.
A .New To vii.
A new town has been started
three miles north of Drain called
Hudson. Messrs. Buckle' &
Heald have opened their new store
and will commence at once toerect
a saw mill. They have a dam al
ready built in Pass creek, and have
contracted with parties for several
million feet of logs. The town of
Hudson will soon be a rival of
Drain. Roseburg Review.
Oregon Fruit in .Nebraska,
A box of ripe prunes sent by
William Feidt, of this city, to
friends in his former home, Ne
braska City, Nebraska, are receiv
ing favorable comment there. The
newspapers of that city made very
flattering mention of the fruit, and
Mr.Feidt has already received sev
eral inquiries about Oregon from
there that have been brought out
by this "missionary" box. States

now no doubt that a sufficient sum

Tuesday the 23d was rather a
wind' day on the Ridge. At the
school house an unusually lively
breeze got to playing such antics
that it gave the school quite j;
fright. It gave the house a good
shake, but did no damages.
A few days since whilethe school
children were at play, Virgil Ar
nold and Wes Oakly ran against
each other. Wes, had his knife
open in his hand and it struck
Virgil in his right side, making a
painful wound. 1 ortunately the
knife struck a rib, or it would no
doubt have been a serious affair.
Mr. Combs also had a narrow
escape from serious injury a few
days since. He had been arrang
ing the bedding in a colt's stall, and
just as he finished his work the
colt kicked, one foot striking him
on the chin, and the other on his
shoulder with such force as to
knock him down. No damage ex
cept slight bruises.
