of the hardware stores yesterday
and wanted to buy some small
steel saws, such as cracksmen and
jail birds us" to surprise their jail
ers when they are found absent

This plethora of stout, healthy
tramps leads to the suggestion that
the city officers might do much
toward ridding the city of their
presence by inaugurating a more
vigorous mode of punishment.
When they refuse to work on the
s.reets, instead of giving them
three square meals a day at a
restaurant at the city's expense
they might be given "some such
light die', as d-ied apples and water
until such a time as they fell dis
posed to work. As long as they
are well fed and not compelled to
work they w ill continue to abound.

An order has been received by
Postmaster UDe!l to establish a
pouch mail service on the Eugene
express between Salem and Jelfer
son. The Spokane Jail ISreak,
Miller the murderer of Cole, who
broke jail at Spokane a few days
ago as related in the Herald's
dispatches, has been recaptured.
The sheriff offers a regard of $250
for the capture of the other escaped
prisoneis. Advices from Cheney
are to the effect that the town i
much excited over the behavior of
two men, Bennett and Courtney,
who went there to hunt escaped
prisoners. It is alleged they held
up a number of prominent citizens
under pretence that they were the
men they were looking for. Ed
ward Connolly, who had been in
town at a republican rally, was
returning home, when he was .-hot
at several times ry these men.
They were arrested and held to
appear before the grand jury in the
tune of $10U0 bail, which is not yet
furnished. The sheriff denies t hat
tli y were deputies.

obtain natural gas at Cie-elum, in
Washington Territory, is being
vigorously- prosecuted. The boring j

over 000 feet. Even if gas is not
obtained, the result of the boing
will have proven that vast wealth
in the shape of coal, which can be
easily mined, lies beneath that
town. When down a little over
400 fei't a stratum of coal seven!
feet thick was struck. It is in- j

reached, if a good flow of gas is not
hail before that. The company
engaged in this enterprise is
wealthy and has spent upwards of

Monday evening, being the
tenth anniversary of the marriage
of Kev. and Mrs A. M. Acheson,
of Oakville, their many friends
and parishioners took occasion to
to call upon them enmasse and
unexpectedly, and spent a very
sociable and pleasant evening.
They brought with them many-
substantial remembrances with I
which they made Mr. and Mrs.
Acheson richer and happier than
before. Kev. S. G. Irvine, who
united the happy couple ten years
ago was present and enlivened the
time with happy speeches, and
was assisted in the same by Kev.

was one long to be remembered.

L. Wyman, who was sentenced to
a term of three years in the pen
itentiary, convicted of horse steal
ing. Wyman is a big, burly fellow
of about thirtv-three years. The
sheriff was assisted on the journey
by deputy prosecuting Attorney
Charles Moores, as ihe trip was of
such length. To reach here from
Lakeview it is necessary to stage it
for one hundred and sixty miles,
and consequently is a most tedious
journey, when to it is added the
labor of guarding a prisoner.
