A. Sample returned on last night's
train from a trip to Portland. The
primary object of Air. Sample's

ty Of apples for the Umatilla coun
ty Grange, and he returned with a
carload of the fruit, the saving in
price tor farmers amounting to con

Moore have located about 1500
acres of timber and agricultural
and on the line of the Oregon Pa
cific, about 22 miles above Me
hania. Some of the land will be
taken as homestead by those of the
company who were soldiers, and
ha.e but a short period to live
upon it, and a portion of it will be
bought as timberland.
The land has fine timber upon it,
and it is the intention of the com
pany to take in a portable saw mill,
also to start some fruit ranches.
The building of the Oregon Pa
cific through this district has ren
dered valuable large tracts of rue
timber as well as small pieces of
choice fi ait and garden lands along
the Santiam river, a portion of
which is yet unsurveyed. The
lauds taken by these gentlemen
are surveyed, and will doubtless
soon become verv valuable.

Two New Placer Mines Located Ward's
Quartz Claim Other Notes.
Salem Statesman.
Charles Cook, a California
miner, has located two placer min
ing claims on the Little North Fork
of the Santiam, above Mehaina,
and yesterday started his hydraul
ics up from Turner to develop
them. Mr. Cook went into the
Santiam region about a week since,
and prospected along the Little
North Fork. He was struck with
the promise of gold at Panther
creek bar and at Bear creek bar,
seven and eight miles from Me
hama, and he located his claims at
these points. Obtaining some free
gold from the bars, he took it to
Portland, and found it to be worth
j;2i an ounce. Mr. Cook is an ex
perienced placer miner, and he is
satisfied that he has struck a good
thing. He was in Salem yester
day, and left on the morning train
for the Santiam, where with two
men he will begin active mining
operations.
B. C. Ward returned to Salem
Wednesday night from his quartz
claim on the Little North Fork,
above Cook's, with some vry fine
specimens of silver peacock ore.
He will send them to Salt Lake
City for assay, and as soon as he
gets his returns, he will begin
active operations on his claim.
Mr. Ward is interested jointly in
several claims with Amos Strong,
T. Howard and A. II. Smith, of
Salem. They are satisfied that
they have a bonanza, and thty
propose to spare no effort or ex
pense in developing it.

urday night a man named James
Kitsford for selling whisky without
a proper license and to minors in
the saloon of A. D. Harmon, at
Rock Creek, on the Oregon Pacific.
George Maley was recently bound
over for a similar offense, and
when he left Ritstord continued the
business. The people of Rock
Creek axe determined to abolish
this saloon. Deputy Smith, after
a vigorous fight with several
drunken loungers abont the place,
closed and locked the saloon. No
one was seriously hurt in the fight.
On preliminary examination Rits
tord was Vound over to await the
action of the grand jury.

chain at work on the streets.

The Portland News savs : A fire
broke out in the residence of A.
Sunderland, the dairv commis
sioner, on Sauvie's Island at 10
o'clock on Saturday night and con
sumed the buildings and outhouses
together with their contents. Mr.
Sunderland was sleeping in the
house at the time and was awaken
ed by pieces of the ceiling falling
down on his bed. He grabbed the
feather bed on w hich he was sleep
ing and rushed cUt of t.ie burning
building, literally J. taking up his
bed and running. It was the onlv
thing saved from the fire. The loss
is about $2500, and ttie buildings
were injured for if 1 000 in the State
Insurance Company, of Salem.
The lire broke out up stairs, where
no one was sleeping and the origin
of it is unknown, but is supposed
to have been caued by a detective
chimnev.

The team owned bv John
Schmeer, who was driving" a drum
mer from Corvallis Sunday ran
away and everturned the buggy,
leaving the occupants beside
the road. The team ran home and
came to their owner's livery stable.
Mr. .chmeer hired a farmer's
wagon and reached home with the
drummer later in the evening,
the latter not being seriously hurt.
Mr. Schmeer sustained the frac
ture of a rib.

The officials of the Oregon Pa
cific railroad, W. M. Iloag, Wallis
Nash and A. O. Eckelsonare in the
city with their attorney, J. C.

after the action pending in the cir
cuit court between t ;at road and
(i. W. Hunt. This is the action
wherein the Oregon Pacific seeks
to recover $.S' ,0 0 damage from Mr.
Hunt for throwing up his contract
on the road. Hunt first sued the
railroad company for $80,000 al
leged to be due for work performed
on the contract in question.
Claimed lie was llbled.
A man called Capt. O'Brien, of
Eugene, was found on Second
street last evening with a severe
gash cut on his head. He claimed
he was robbed of if 100 and a gold
watch. Dr. Maston sewed the
wound up and it was found that he
was drunk. He was taken to the
city jail to sober up. It is not
probable that he ever owned $100
or a gold watch .

case of G. W. Belt, for deputy dis
trict attorney fees, in favor of
Deputy L. H. Montanye judg
ment was granted to the plaintifi'

amounting to about $150 had ac

fusing to allow tne claims.
