EDITOR AL NOTES.
Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe
is again reported as dying.
Senator Dolph started for his
home in Portland on last Saturday,
as soon as congress adjourned.
John L. Scllivan, it is said, has
decided since his recent illness that
came n ;arly proving fatal, to for
ever forswear the use of all intox
icating liquors. If he adheres to
his resolution he will have to also
forswear the prize ring, for the too
invariable go together. Without
intoxicating liquors to furnish the
exciting element the prize ring, all
like brutal so called sporting games
and practices would cease entirely.
The editor of the can Erancisco
Spirit of the Times, is an active
advocate for the election of ladies
upon the board of education in that
city. He says: "Some men say
women who cannot vote ought not
to run for office. Ah ! there ! Well,
if they haven't the right to vote we
have ; and just see that their names
are recorded on every ballot for
members of the board of educa
tion." England derives twenty-three
millions yearly from the tariff on
tea. Under our present tariff tea
is on the free list. That .hows the
difference between taxing the
necessities of life, for tea has be
come o common in use that it is a
necessity, and a tariff for revenue
that must perforce, select as its
basis articles cf constant and
known consumption, in order to
produce a constant in known
revenue.
Judge William A. Woods of the
United States District Court of
Indiana said the other day. "If
General Harrison became president
there will be a man at the head of
the government able to conduct
the administration on principles of
true and pure statesmanship. I
have known General Harrison for
many years, both in a personal and
professional way, and I have great
admiration for hirn. both as a man
and as a lawyer. I consider him
more however than simply a law
yer. He is a man of broad views
and firm grasp, and is wonderfully
self-poised and self-reliant. As
president, his administration
would be his own."

w.iiteness and great purity. Beds
i of niter are also found sufficiently
pure to readily iu.se when thrown
on hot coals. As is now well
k iovn, the Great Salt Lake is an
immense, limitless magazine of
s.
ilt, that can be readily obtained
in
any desired quantity by the
simple process ot evaporation.
From this lake yast quantities of
S-ilphate of soda are also secured,
blown on shore at certain tempera
tures by the winds, where hundreds
of tons are often piled up in a
single night, that can be utilized in
the cheap production of sal soda
and carbonate of soda.
Mythical mines and buried
treasures hold the most alluring
attraction upon human beings of
any hallucination that controls
men. Recently a part3- of prospect
ing miners wore themselves out
in searching for the famous myth
known as the Adams gulch in New
Mexico, all giving it up with the
exception of three wh maintained
the search. Later the mangled
corpse ot one of these was found
and it is supposed that the other
two wert? massacred by the Indians.
The man who to evade meeting
the toils anxieties and vicissitudes
of this life, b3T his own hand anti
cipates the stern messenger of
death and crosses the dark riyer
befi re nature calls upon him to
take the voyage, is by courtesy
styled a suicide. Perhaps if the
right appellation were given in
most cases it would be called
cowardice, for that is the oppro
brious cognomen oftiie run-a-way
from the battlefield and daily life
is but a succession of battles after
all.
For the want of something bet
ter, the democratic press has
harped upon the conduct of Gen
eral Harrison during the famous
railroad strike of 1S77. On that
subject, here is what Judge Wil
liam A. Woods of the United States
District Court of Indiana, has to
say: "No sensible man acquainted
with General Harrison's character,
can believe such statements as are
made, for a moment. In the first
place, he is a man of the greatest
humanity and sympathy, and it
would simply be contrary to his
character and nature to talk about
'shooting people down.' Secondly,
lie is one of the most self-contained
men in the world. I know that
instead of being anxious to have
the soldiers brought into conflict
with the strikers, there were oditr
persons willing for such an issue
whom he restrained. It was
largely through his efforts that a
conflict and bloodshed were
averted. I know this."
