EDITOR AL NOTES.
A little American life, will and
backbone has been displayed in
the Asiatic country of Corea, and
it evidently changes the condition
of affairs in that oriental country
and awakes China to the fact that
she cannot hold despotic sway at
her own sweet will and pleasure.
The citizens of this part of the
Willamette valley are interested in
the progress of the diplomatic
struggle for ascendancy goin on
in that far away land, for the
American who had led the Corean
government in the matter is Judge
O. N. Denney, formerly a resident
of this county. lie was appointed
confidential adviser to the king of
Corea, on the adyice of the prime
minister of China, who thought
that the recommendation would
secure Judge Denny's aid in hold
ing China supremacy ovt:r Corea.
But the Judge advised the king in
the interests of the king's own
country and not in the interest of
China and in consequence thereof
Corea is likely to become an inde
pendent nation.
As one of the latest wonder
working processes, it may be re
related that Mr. Dubus Bonnet, of
Lille, France, has invented a
process of spinning and weaving
glass int cloth. The warp is com
posed of silk, forming the body
and groundwork, on which the
pattern in glass appears, as effected
by th weft. The requisite flexi
bility of glss thread for manu
facturing purposes is to be ascribed
to its extreme fineness, as not le; -s
than from fifty to sixty of the
origiual strands are required to
form one thread of the woof. Tie
process is slow, for no more than a
yard of cloth can be produced in
twelve hours. The work, however,
is extremely beautiful and com
paratively cheap.
The German Emperor's ostenta
tious visit to the Pope of Rome,
does not appear to have been as
harmonious in results as was in
tended. It was probably like all
other royal displays simply hol
low mockery of parade and that is
all. Diplomacy was the incentive
and directing agency, and as is
often the case probably shot wide
of the intended mark.
Prognostications and sugtrea
tion as to the organization of the
next legislature are already flying

Even the Japanese are picking
no civilization. Recently a Japan
ese women accused an officer of
one of the landing Oriental line of
steamers with ussanlting her on
board his vessel, but on being
pressed with a legal investigation
she retracted the charge, thus
showing that she was attempting
a clear case of blackmail. It is
wonderful how quick these people
will pick up civilized practices.
