About two weeks ago W. B.
Shannon, a well-to-do market gar
dener, living across the river, ad
vertised in the Herald for a wife.

respond with him "with a view to
matrimony." but about a week ago
he received a reply which im
pressed him most "favorably. A
well-preserved widow of about 45,
wrote, modestly stating that she
was a good cook, not afraid of
housework and was not without,
some nn ans,and brief! v designated
the residence where he might call
to see her, which invitation he ac
cepted forthwith.
One call followed another, and it
did not require many days for them
to discover that they were of one
mind upon the subject. In fact
their brief acquaintance bad de
veloped into more than friendship,
and there were
"Two minds with but a single thought,
Two hearts that beat as one."
The day was accordingly set, and
to-dav at "l o'clock the contracting
pauies, Mr. W. B. Shannon and
Mrs. B. A. Reynolds, who were
brought together through that all

The citizens of Salem are trying
to imitate Albany's example in
securing a direct outlet to the sea.
At a meeting of the Salem Board
of Trade Monday evening the ad
visability of making an effort to
secure direct railroad connection
with the sea, via Astoria, was con

intention of the Astoria Railroad
Company to build irom Astoria to
Tillamook via Clatsop beach,
thence through the low pass east
of Tillamook to the Grand Ronde
country, and thence to a junction
with the Oregon Pacific. It was
suggested that there exists a very
good chance to secure, by proper
effort the passage of this road
through balem.

pointed to correspond with the
Astoria company and ascertain

nect with tne Oregon Pacific at
Salem, for the very good reason
that the Oregon Pacific railroad
does not pas s through Salem, but
through Albany, and as its con
nection with the Southern Pacific

Salem, Oct. 1C. A writer in the
Evening Journal, of this city, after
a trip over the Oregon Pacific rail
road extension, says: The road
will be completed to Mehama and
trains will be running from Albany
by week after next. Then Albany
will be the base of supplies:

branch line somewhere near tav-

land has of late been eagerly sought
for, and the settlers report it about
all taken up, as far as the road is
graded. Mills City and Gatesville
on Mt. Horeb are new towns. At
the former a very expensive ditch
is being dug for a mill already in
process of construction, which is to
cut S0,000 feet of lumber per day.
The tine timber claims are rapidly
being taken up. Nineteen soldiers
from Albany have taken up home
steads, intending to fill out the bal
ance of the five years, after de
ducting tlifcir service in the army.
The mill men are cutting down
considerable timber, allowing near
the railroad as high as (10 cents per
thousand, stumpage.

some of the many friends of Mrs.
J. O. Roland, who will shortly re
move with her husband to Frine
ville, met at her residence and
surprised her by the presentation
of a set of silver knives, forks, tea
spoons, tablespoons and butter
knile. Mrs. F. M. Miller, on be
half of the donors, presented the
articles with the following neat ad
dress: "Mrs. Roland, it is with
deep and sincere regret that your
many friends here in Lebanon
have learned that you and your
esteemed family are soon to leave
us and find a new home. Your
presence, kindness, as well as many
favors extended, have endeared

Tho Citizens of Our Neighboring Town

Major Jones, chief of United
States engineer corps, department
of the Columbia, will go to Cor
vallis to-day to make arrangements
for the construction of a revetmei t
in the Willamette river near that
place.
The cause of the trouble is this:
For years past, every time the
river became unusually high, there
was imminent danger that the
river would wash a cut through the
peninsula which is just opposite
the town, and which tiirows the
river to the place.
In order to avert such a calamity
an appropriation of $14,000 has
been made to build the revetment
which will be made of brush,
laid down and staked with living
willows, which will take root and
grow, forming a jiermanent bank.
The work will be done about a mile
abeve the town. Should the river
desert the bed and cut across the
peninsula, it would leave the town j
, ., , -
about a mile awav, and injure it
incalculably. In such a case, how
ever, it could be turned back into
its natural channel, but the cost
would be a great deal heavier than
to put in tne revot.nent,. though
the appropriation will not cover
the cost as it is.
