Not a few of the people who
form the voters of the country,
wrap the mantle of exclusiveness
about them, and with a little of
the spirit that prompts the feeling
that "I am better than thou art,"
conclude that they will not meddle
with politics; that they will refrain
from contaminating their minds
with its slum ; and that they will
not mingle with the common herd
that jostle each other at the polls,
but will stay away and not vote.
To such persons Lindou in the
Husbandman very pointedly says :
"A large portion of corrupt legisla
tion and unjust laws is due to those
very good people who look upon
politics with horror, stay at home
election day and grumble con
tinually about the dangerous con
dition of the country and the
extravagance of unscrupulous
politicians. These people form a
considerable portion of our voting
population and if they would quit
complaining and do their duty at
the polls there migh.t Jbe hope of
government purification: He who
intentionally fails to cast his ballot
for good government at the polls
does not deserve the name of
citizen." And he might have
added that such an individual is.
criminally negligent in performing
.a know duty, and has no more
right to enjoy the privileges of this
government than a thief has to
enjoy the stolen goods in his pos
session. Truly it was Home .Uarket who
nominated by the republicans
;at Chicago. Here is the Louden
Times saying, in a review of our
last census before it saw a pros
pect of getting English goods iruo
our market duty-free : '"It is a
peculiarity of North American
development and evidence of its
solidity that town and country
grow together. As the branches
and roots of a healthy tree should
stretch forth in unison, prosperous
life in a newly planted American
territory is certain to have its re
flex in a thriving and neighboring
market town." Town and country
that grow great together means
home market, which translated is :
Harrison and Morton.
If congress would adjourn in
stead of dragging its weary session
along, it might hope that many of
its sins of omission and commission
would eventually be forgiven

A problem whu-.ii the Oregon
iruit growers will in future have to
contend with seems to be to keau
worms out of the growing apples.
Tiie entire crop this year is mort
ar less affected.
Men who gamble in articles of
food employ methods akin to those
used by three-card monte sharpers,
and do a great deal more mischief
in establishing fictitious values to
be paid oy innocent purchasers.
A sugar trust that increases cost
one-fourth to every consumer,
solely for the benefit of its mem
bers, deserves to have laid upon it
the heavy hand of law with all the
penalties, and that without delay.
Honesty, strict, old-fashioned
honesty, does not lead to the pos
session of millions, except in very
rare cases, but it is a good thing to
have about the house, as an old
possession, when the call to vacate
comes.
The best kind of politics for any
neighborhood of farmers, is that
which looks after local interests as,
for instance, good roads, good
schools, good morals, in short
ever thing that is good for all inter
ests. Even trade i? looking up ami the
crops, with few exceptions, are
good. Tf heaven helps those who
help themselves, so does it help a
party that helps mankind. Fate
and votes will certainly elect Har
rison and Morton next month
The matter of trusts must and
will be overhauled. It is a perti
nent remark that the interests of all
the people are greater than the
interests of the few who seek indi
vidual profit through trusts that
have the essential elements of
conspiracy.
x
About two weeks ago a well-to-do
gardener advertised in the
Herald for a wife, and as a result
his marriage with a comely and
industrious widow will occur in
this city to-day ; yet a few slow
young people will continue to lose
opportunities and run a one-horse
business because they do not be
lieve it pays to advertise.
Salem would like to have the
proposed railroad from Astoria to
Albany via Tillamook to switch
off at Salem instead of connecting
with the Oregon Pacilic and South
ern Pacific at this city. Since the
matter of railroad switches is
mentioned it will be remembered
that Salem wanted to build a
switch of the Oregon Pacific to that
city a year ago. but did not raise
the monev.
The summary manner in which
the editors of such lightweight
papers as the States Rights Demo
crat settles the tariff questi&n with
one stroke of their pen, as it were,
is positively amusing when com
pared with the statement of that
great political writer, Horace
freely, who, after studving it for a
life time, had to acknowledge that
it was a problem which it would
tafce many years, if not ages, of
experience for the country to solve.
