The Herald thinks that some en
terprising man, by putting a little
time and money into the develop
ment of coal mines in Linn county,
would quickly find themselves in
possession of large fortunes.
Doubtless this is true, and it ap
plies to a great many counties in
Oregon and Washington territory.
Rich coal deposits have been dis
covered near the proposed location
of a colony from Pennsylvania,
which is to settle in the Greenhorn
bottom of the Santiam river, and
the colonists will give considerable

On Wednesday a feat was per
formed at Newport, says the News,
which was very novel and surpris
ing. Mrs. Fannv Seiforth and
Miss 3lary West fall, who, with a
number of their friends, all from
Polk count-, were spending a few
days by the ' seaside, and while
standing on a log which projected
out into the bay, discovered a
large fish slowly swimming toward
them. They procured a large rock,
and when the iish came close
alongside hurled the missle at
him, and, s range to say, hit him
square on the back, which pro
jected a little above 'he surface of
the water. This entirely paralyzed
their victim, and rendered him an
easy prey. They dragged him
ashore, and the funny looking lish
proved to he a veritable shark
three and a half feet in length.
Foot Kaccs.
A foot race was run at Corvallis
Saturday between Cameron and a
sprinter named Philpott for a purse
of Cameron gave Philpott
five feet, and the race was declared
a tie. Philpott claimed that Cam
eron did not' beat him five feet and
the money was subsequently
turned over to him. The next day
they ran again and Cameron won",
the purse being the same, $50.
The same day Long and a man
named Messenger ran at this city
or a purse of $55,111 which Messen
ger won by one foot. Messenger
and Philpott will run at the fair
grounds at this city to day between
the hours of 3 and" 4 for "a similar
