Some humanitarian, with a prac
tical turn of mind, is talking of ap
plying telephones to the infectious
wards of the French hospitals, so
as to enable the sick people iso
lated in their contagious sufferings
to have the comfort of hearing
their relatives' voices without any
risk of conveying infection by an
interview.
The very elements seem to favor
the republican cause. Recently at
a republican gathering at Olympia,
W. T., a rain and thunder storm
furnished the bombardment and
illumination, and so charged was
the atmosphere with electricity
that Mt. Ranier, BO Juiles distant,
was so grandly lit up that it was
plainly visible through the
stygian darkness.
The claim made by Gov. Hill,
in one of his Indiana speeches,
that to the democratic party is due
the credit of all the action on the
tariff revision matter, and that the
senate substitute .JEqr the Mills bill
is reprehensible, because it comes
just on the eve of the election, is
absurd in the extreme, in view of
the facts that al.' measures of that
nature mast originate in the house
and that the senate acted promptly
just as soon as the Mills bill
reached it, and that the democratic
house put off action as late befoie
election as it possibly could.
A significant fact for those to
consider who have suc'i a profound
respect, love and admiration for
foreign markets and manufactures
is that during the past season the
fine salmon fishing business o:.i this
coast would have been a disastrous
failure if the English and foreign
market had been depended upon.
The output of the Columbia rer
canneries this year was prin
cipally sold in the home markets
of the United States. By so doing
the canneries were enabled to pay
fishermen $1.2-3 per fish for the
catch. If they had depended upon
the usual English market no such
price could have been paid.
Good temper and beauty of pei
son seems to be rather foreiga to
each other, judging from the re
sults of exhibitions where prizes
were awarded to the most beauti
ful woman. It is said that an e.
hibition of this kind in New York
several years ago led to an attack

report of a similar shindy at the
close of a beauty how in London.
The English women, however, sur
passed their Yankee sisters, for
one of them was so extremely
vulvar as to spit in the face of the
fnvit-prizc- winner and to try o
gouge out her eyes. A special de
tail of police ought to be made for
these shows, for beauty scorned
appears to be as dangerous as a
mountain lion.

The following is the record
which AtlaiiLd, Ga. shows under
hih license. "A count was made
last Sair.ruay of the cases booked
In the l-union house for tiie first
three months of 1SS7, and for the
same mo-iths of 18SS. During this
year, or sint the saloons have
opened in Atlanta, these has been
one thousand one hundred and
tnirty-two more cases booked than
during the same period of last year
under prohibition.
This great increase in the record
of crime is certainly the outgrowth
of the high license, open bar sys
tem, aud every man who cast his
ballot for anti-prohibition in that
city,or any other, should pause and
think what this immense increase
of crime, poverty ami woe means.
See the figures ; not a single hun
dred, but more than eleven hun
dred is the startling record ! Surely
an arrest of thought should follow
such a disclosure.
Cigarette manufacturers and

many times vulgar in the extreme.
It is quite time that more legal re
straint was placed upon the busi

resolute, public opinion.

Iowa's new liquor law went into
