Ilie Price or Bread to Be Advanced
at the Cast.
New York Ociober 9. The
leading bakers of tins city have
determined upon an advance In the
price ot bread, aud a meeting to
arrange for the general adoption ot
a schedule has been called for to
morrow night. They claim that
the continued corner in wheat and
the consequent steady advance in
wholesale prices of Hour has made
sucn action inevitable. For a
week back the weight of loavc?
iias been diuiisheu li'uiu two tc
four ounces in lieu of an increase
in price, but now they find that
such a course is impracticable, a
for the regulation loaf under the
circums-tances they will be com
toiierK )nly what might be
deTOminaterM goodsized roll.
It is on the smaller bakers that
the corners fall with crushing
eflcct. The majority o! them pu'
chase in small quantities, and no
provision is made for such emer
gencies as now exist. Those -wii
have sought the protection ot i;u
gtr owners by purchasing of them
at wholesale rates, have uot only
advanced prices, but have diuiish
ed the size of the loaves. Tne big
bakeries have about exhausted
their stock, and are unable to pur
chase as largely as they desire at
even present rates. According, to
one baker's estimate, 10,000 bar
rels of flour a week less will be con
sumed in New York so long as the
prevailing stringency continues.
Chicago, October 9. As a re
suit of the recent dvance in wheat
and the consequent rise in the
price of flour, the local bakers who
haye been debating the question
for several days, decided this even
ing to advace the price of bread 1
cent a loaf to consumers.

A &uutifn(e for Laughing Uas in
Ieutist' Office.
Boston Corr. St. Louis Globe-Democrat
Boston people nowadays have
their superfluous teeth drawn by
means of electricity. Inasmuch as
all new ideas in the arts and
sciences are spiead from this en
lightened metropolis originallj,
ud from hence extended over the
country ; there is little doubt that
sooner or later this new method
will supersede laughing gas and
ether in other big cities of the
Union. The process in question is
very simple,scarcely any apparatus
being required beyond any ordin
ary two cell battery, with vibrator
attachment. This attachment is a
thin strip of metal, fastened at the
ends, winch is made to vibrate a
thousand cr more limes per second
by the electric cuirent. At each
vibration the circuit is cut off and
renewed again, the effect being to
give a perfectly - steady flow ot the
mysterious fluid. In order to
make sure that the flow is quite
satislactory the operator tunes the
machine, assisted by a little reed
tuning-pipe, until the strip of
metal sings "A." So far, so goof.
Now, to the buttery are attached
three wires. Two of them have
handles at the ends, and a third is
hitched to a forceps. The patient
iu the cuair is given a handle '-o
nold in each hand and the current
is turned on gradually until lt'be
comes painful. Then he is told to
grasp the handles as strongly as
possible, the e.ectiicity having
b: en switched off for a uiomeii, is
turned on again suddenly and the
dentai surgeon applies Ins forceps,
simu.taneously to the tooth. Tne
instant the molar is touched, it, as
well as the parts surrounding, be
comes eh ctnfied aod absolutely
iusensible to pain. When it is
withdrawn from the socket the
subject of the operation feels not
the slightes1: disagreeable sensation..
A jerk aud the tooth is out; the
paiient chops the bandies aud the
i!hur is over.
A FA1S1.K WITH A MOKAL,
Thi attention of the Albanjr
Democrat is called to the following
l a - le :
"The tai ill" is a tax," screamed
the democratic parrot- yesterday.
"A tax," said a carpenter who
was merrily working with piane
and saw ; '"why, how on earth can
that be?"
"The tariff is a tax," was the
only response.
"Now, look here, you stupid
bird," said the carpenter; "take
this plane for example, and I see
by a picture in Harper's Weekly
that the tariff taxes me on tnis,
and also on this saw. It ain't true
because I happen to know that the
price of jackplanes in free trade
Fmglaud is $15 per dozen, and the
price in the United States is only
$10.20 per dozen, and I also know
that common hand saws are s 11
ing to-day in England at $6 per
dozen and here at $5 per dozen.
"Where dees the tax come in?"
And then the carpenter proceeded
with his work. e
Nothing daunted by this, the
parrot squeaked : "The tariff is a
tax." Portland News.
