He will arrive at Chicago about the
17th or ISth of Oct.
There is nothing serious in his
present indisposition, and the can
cel ment of his East Saginaw and
Ithaca dates is caused simply by
his desire to husband his voice.

Orders to Strict ly Enforce the Chi
nese Exclusion Act.
Washington, October 5. Act
ing Secretary Thompson to-day
telegraphed the provisions of the
Chinese Exclusion act, which went
into effect yesterday, to the Col
lector of Customs at San Francisco
and at the same time issued a cir
cularto the Custcni-boue officers
at other, ports promulgating the
law and instructing them to see to
its strict enforcement. It is said
that there are nearly 800 Chinese
emigrants on the steamship which
is expected to arrive at San Fran
cisco on Thursday.

Attorney-General Garland ar
rived this morning from his home
at Hominy Hill, Ark, He was

pected to resume his duties at the

rible collision occurred near Han
nigal station on the Rome, Waters
town and Ogdensburg railroad this
morning. The Lehigh Valley pas
cenger train collided with a wild
cat tra;n lrom Oswego, on a curve ,
at Deep Cut. The wildcat train
was running iorty miles an hour,
ahd the Lehigh Valteytraih . forty -k
miles. The locomotives were
smashed into a thousand pieces
and the cars nearly demolished.
Of the wildcat train's crew Engi
neer Slatterly was killed, Fireman "
Kiley was frightfully scalded, and
the conductor and brakeman both
were badly injured. Of the Le
high train Engineer Hatch was
badly cat and scalded. Conductor
Whitegate and Biakeman Smith
were badly hurt and the former
