board of regents of the Oregon
agricultural college at Corvallis,
I lias written to Gov. Pennoyer, say
ing that he lias been instructed by
the board to apply for seventy-five
stand of cadet rifles of the latest
::iftern for the use of the students,
the instructor having reported that
they are sufficiently advanced to
require the use of arms for their
further progress. Gov. Pennoyer
has turned the letter over to Ad
jutant General Sbofner, O. N. G.,
who says that there are no arms
on hand now, but there will be
plenty if Congressman Hermann's
bill providing for an allowance of
1000 extra guns and tAo Gatling
guns for Oregon becomes a law. It
has passed the hcuse and is now
in the senate.

The Oregonian has been pulish
ing items in regard to rare coins of
the earlier U. S. coinage. Last
evening t!ie conductor on the Leb
anon train exhibited to us several
old coins of the description re
ferred 10. One half dollar, bearing
date of 1825, had on its rim, in
place of milling, "Fifty cents or a
dollar." Another, bearing date of
1833, had on its rim "Fifty cents or
half a dollar." He also had in his
possession a Louis I'd hp 5-franc
piece of 1S35. Quite an interest is
being taken in these old coins.

The work of improving the river
channel at Corvallis will be started
as soon as possible. This consists
of revetting, that is, covering with
protection from the wash of the
waves, about 6000 feet of the river
banks. No dredging will be done
on the upper Willamette, but the
bars will be deepened by scraping,
which the snasrboat will perform,
and by the construction of tem
porary wingdams.

i:igi:k .NOTES.
Eic.ENE City, Aug. 2.
The Lane county fair closed Sat
urday night at 10 o'clock. It has
been the most successful exhibit
since the organization, as far as the
public interest is concerned, and so
of course financially. The pro
ceeds are about "f 1O0U. The races
were hardly up to the mark, but
perhaps that is a thing to be glad
of. (ieorge Beishaw'.s exhibit of
wheat was of course unapproach
able. Twe display of corn was
enough to make one think he was
back in old Missouri. One of the
most noticeable features was the
finest display of dried fruit ever
made in Lane county. These were
grown and desicated by Major
Sladden. To show the interest in
this new industry, I may inform
your readers that Major Sladden
has out in the vicinity of Eugene
between 7000 and 8000 trees. But
1 will have more to say of this in
another communication. At the
fair were flowers bright and radiant
enough to make one imagine him
self in the tropics bedquilts old
enough and often enough displayed
to be placed on the retired list
Squashes several single specimens
tipping the beam at 115 pounds.
Watermelons raised in Lane county
of 3(3 pounds. Apples, big, red
and yellow enough to make
us know that we have the best
fruit country on earth. Rocks,
gold, silver and nickel bearing
enough to show us that we are in
midst of a rich mineral belt that
only needs development. Then
the stock display was a wonderful
improvement on any form -r year,
Oregon farmers are at last catching
on to .he fact that no kind of stock
pays to raise, but the improved
breeds. 1 am informed by the
management that it is proposed to
cut loose from the horse racing
business altogether, and giving the
exclusive attention of the society
to the exhibits of the pavilion and
the stock.
One of the most noticeable social
events of the past month was the
reunion of J. W. Geary Post, No.
7, G. A. R. and the Women's
Relief Corps. After one of the
most fitting addresses by the Com
mander R. E. Eastland, full of the
tenderest remembrances of the
past, and hopeful suggestions as to
the future, and a happy response
by Mrs. Sla'dden the president of
the Corps, the assembly was
favored with a few songs by a choir
of professionals led by Profs. Mil
lard and Buck. Then followed two
hours of such social amusemenc
and refreshments as few know so
well how to get up and enjoy as
soldiers, and soldiers wives and
children. I must not omit to speak
of the presentation of a gold badge
to Mrs. Fry as an expression of the
esteem in which she is held by the
sisterhood.
The public school has added one
grade, and now with eight grades
it takes rank with any public
school in the state. Prof. Williams,
thejprincipal seems to be emphatic
ally the right man in the right
place. The people seem to feel
too, that he is ably supported by
corps of teachers.
Happiness and Contentment,
Cannot go hand in hand if we look on
the dark side of every little obstacle.
Nothing will so darken life and make
it a burden as Dyspepsia. Acker's
Dyspepsia Tablets will cure the
worst form of Dyspepsia, Constipa
tion and Indigestion, and make life a
happiuess and pleasure. Sold at 25

I have received a new line in
