The Oregonian says : For some
time past Mr. John Dill and sev
eral others have been engaged in
digging a well in Powe'l's valley.
Last Saturday the well was 40 feet
deep and the men were afraid to
go down on account of foul air. In
order to ascertain how matters
were at the bottom a lighted candle
was let down, and it was found to
burn brightly. Dill was lowered
and he reported it was ail right.
He Aas hoisted up, but as socn as
he reached the surface he fell
backward into the bottom of the
well. When he was brought up
again he was found to be dead. It
seems that when he came into the
iresh air he was in an exhausted
condition and fainted. He was an
unmarried man, and aoout o5
years of age.

citizens of Prineviile ha' e offered

can run on the upper river, it is

Hie case of Sovern vs. Yoran,
decided in the supreme court, is
one which has excited a great
amount of interest in Lane county,
and to which a great deal thav
savors of the romantic attaches.
Several years since an old lady
named Goodchild died near Eu-
gene,!eaving a considerable amoun
ot property. A Air. Movent was
appointed administrator of her
est ite, ami the place was sold to a
man named Yoran. One day
Yoran's boy Iarwiu and a play
mate named Hugh Gray were dig
ging about in the barn and they
discovered two cans full of money,
nearly all gold, one containing
.flOUO", and the other $925. They
turned their find over to Mr. Yoran,
who advertised it in the papers as
lost property, for the time re
quired by statute. No claimant
appearing within the prescribed
time, he turned over one-half the
money to the tounty, as required
by statute, and gave the other to
his boy. After the transaction was
completed Sovern, the adminis
trator, heard of it and began mi it
for the recovery of the money. He
was beaten in the circuit court,
and tnen he appealed to the
supreme court, where a decision
against him was also rendered.
Then he got a rehearing, and Mon
day the jcase was again decided
against him, Judge Lord rendering
the decision.

The examination of Villa l M
Oune, the slayer of James I'.ewley,
was concluded at Willamina, Yam
hill county, before Justice Leonard
last Saturday night, McCtme being
discharged. The examination be
gan Thursday and continued dur
ing Friday and Saturday. A great
amount of testimony was intro
duced, the general drift of which
appeared to be that McCuue was
justified in killing Bewley.

Sunday morning at Independ
ence Polk county, the resilience of
Geo. Chamberlain, a carpenter,
was burned to the ground. No
one was living in the house at the
time, Mr. Chamberlain being at
Pallas at work, and his family at
the coast. The origin seems tin
doubtedly to have been incend'ary.
The loss was about $J00.

Engine Co. No. 1, held Monday
evening, Walter Parker was elected
as a member of the board of fire
delegates ami C. W. Watts was
elected foreman. The company is
in a thriving condition, several
new members, having been ad
mitted at the last meeting.
